A program I'm installing requires that I install Java Runtime Environment... I don't know much about Java programs and wanted to know if this is the one that represents a security risk?

The Microsoft version was a big security risk. Most people have Java on there systems as it is required for many sites and also many programs that you may run. Just use the sun version. It's listed in here: How to Protect yourself from malware!

How do I distinguish the Microsoft version from the Sun Java one? When I try to install this program it tries to connect me to www.java.com... would that indicate the Microsoft version?

The last parts of the article Chaslang mentioned.

After you get the Sun JVM installed the program shouldnt re-direct to java.com When it redirects here its trying to get the Sun JVM so this is ok.
