Java-SunJava-JRE...Update What & How?

My present dilema concerns the java stuff. The info for my version is as follows:
Java(TM) Plug-in: Version 1.4.2
Using JRE version 1.4.2 Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM
User home directory = C:\Documents and Settings\Terrie
Proxy Configuration: No proxy

I went to the java.sun.com site and found no answers to my specific question. I'm showing my ignorance here because all the diferent "versions" of Java are very confusing to me. At this point, I don't know what needs to be updated and what needs to be deleted/uninstalled.

What do I need to do to ensure I have the latest update (and presumably most secure) version of Java and which "one" do I want? :confused

Hi!

Well, I am quite proud of myself. I found a link (on the Java website) that provided the necessary information! Even though it did not answer all of my Java questions, I still learned something! The link verifies what is currently on your computer and determines if an upgrade (and which upgrade) is necessary. Whew! Just go to the link below and then click on "verify installation." Hope this helps someone else.
