Hi guys, I was gonna upgrade my JAVA (JRE) engine to a later version.

I was wondering whether I should remove the older JAVA version first and then install the newer version or whether the upgrade is done by installing the newer version over the top of the older one.

    Many thanks for your help

Why can't you just upgrade via the program itself?

There is an applet in Control Pane.

Many thanks for your reply Insomniac. Never been too keen on upgrading 'live' so to speak, which is what I guess the upgrade via the program does.

Much prefer to 'save to disk' and then upgrade. Is this not possible ??

    Many thanks

    risk_reversal,
When you trying to upgrade JAVA, the newer version won't install itself on top of the old one. It will install in parallel.

Therefore you _should_ uninstall the old version first and then install the upgrade, as, when running 2 version, you might get some problems.

    Thank you.

It's ok to install old version over existing version, not necessary to remove old version first. If you later find an older version in add/remove you may remove the old one there. If you find remnants of older version in C:\Documents and Settings\Owner or All Users\Application Data\Sun\Java you may safely delete the file(s) there. You may opt to remove old version first, then install latest version. This is for XP, others will be similar. The new version download is often available from web sources earlier than from the Java updater.
