On the "Read Me First Before Asking For Support" thread it has an address for downloading Sun Java (http://java.com/en/) which I've been trying to access for a couple of days without success. Has it moved or is it out of service er somethin'?

bjgarrick, thanks for the response. I can't seem to download ANYTHING. I have Leechget, it comes up first, and simply stops when I press "start", and when I try to use the microsoft downloader it stops as well.

Try to right click on Manual Installation and select "Save Target As".

bjgarrick, I right clicked SaveTargetAs, then Leechget comes up and I select Desktop, then from the Leechget window that comes up I press Start All, and then it said "searching for Http header (or something like that) and it just stays there and nothing else happens.

I have no experience with Leechget so I dont know what to tell you except do without it and procede.

OK, but that's a problem too because when I close Leechget and just use the microsoft download file thingy it won't download either. It is immediately stopping.

Explain this in detail please, any errors? Does it just freeze and abort the download?

First Leechget comes up, I close it, then a window with "File Download-Security Warning, do you want to save this file?

    Name: jre-1_5_0_02-windows-i586-p-iftw
    Type: Unknown File Type
    From: sunsdlc1-13-vhost2.sun.com

I pick "SAve", then "Save as" then "desktop" then it starts to download but then immediately stops, makes the windows sound when a download is completed, but nothing is downloaded and when I look on the desktop there's a faint image of the download icon (not in bold like it''s supposed to be) and it contains 0KB.

Is it possible to uninstall Leechget temporarily? Its not required you install this JVM its just recommended as its better. Its up to your whether you want to continue with this or procede using Microsofts JVM.

Actually I already have Java installed and was just trying to do the update on it--I also tried from Control Panel, Java, update and got an ERROR-JavaTM Update unable to launch the Java update installer %1 is not a valid win32 application.

I also tried to download something from MG just to see if it was only a Java problem, but I can't download anything from here either, and it won't download with or without Leechget.

Also, it doesn't explain why I can't get the http://java.com webpage. The white "Page cannot be displayed" message comes up.

Yes I could uninstall Leechget if you think it will help.

Sounds like thats your problem, I would give it a try. If it doesnt take care of it you can reinstall it.

    bjgarrick,

It didn't take care of it. Leechget is not the problem. It seems to be Java that's the problem. I can download from other websites using either leechget or windows downloader, except I can't download Java from the Java website.

In fact, I can't connect to java.com, yet I can connect to any other website.
What could be causing this? (help!)

Can you get on another computer, download the manuall install and transfer it to your computer?

If not, then go into "Internet Properties" and select the Advanced Tab. Click "Restore Defaults" and hit OK.

Yes, bjgarrick, I did get onto another computer and download Java but then I discovered that it's Norton Firewall that's blocking me from connecting to java.com in the first place! (good ol' Norton).

Now I can connect if I type in https.java.com instead of just http (secure vs nonsecure).

Is there a way to configure Norton Firewall so that I can connect to java.com without it having to be secure?

Sure, uninstall it and reinstall ZoneAlarm Free, just being honest! :D

Aw...come on...is there really no other way around it? (I'm trying to analyze this problem in a geeky kinda way, bjgarrick, I could use some support  )

Honestly, I have no experience with NPF, I would try to disable it and see if that helps.

There must be a way to configure the settings in NPF. Guess I'll have to call Symantec. It's kinda strange that only that one website would be a problem. Is there something potentially "dangerous" about it that you might know of?

    Thanks for all your help.

NPF has some setting you can change but I dont know where its at, like I said I know nothing about NPF. There's nothing dangerous about the site its just that its trying to load a few things that Norton is blocking. You will have to configure Norton to allow it.

bjgarrick, would you know of anyone here at MG who might know something about NPF configurations? (otherwise I hafta phone Symantec, as their website is not helpful concerning this). Anyways thanks again for your input.

You can post this in the Software Forum and someone will take care of you. Im sure someone will know NPF :)

When you get this taken care of come back and we will complete your cleanup.
