I graduated from college back in December and have been working a security job at a local retailer since... I'm trying to find a post gradutae career (one that compensates me for my B.A. in Criminal Justice)... However I'm having some trouble finding the jobs that will interest me... been on a handful of interviews and have not found what i'm looking for yet... i've been using Monster.com, Yahoo Hotjobs, and the WashingtonPost.com classified...

I'm trying to find a Head Hunter... for those of you unfamiliar with the term... it's a agency (usually) that literally do the job searchingfor you, and sets you up with the information and helps you get interviews... typically, the company that winds up hiring you pays a small fee to the head hunter agency...

i live in the DC/Metro area in Maryland... I'm having a bit of a hard time finding head hunters via the internet... maybe my Internet Searching skills are lacking but i'm thinking there is ANOTHER TERM for "Head Hunter"... because the only hits "Headhunter Maryland" finds is for careerbuilder.com and that's not very helpful...

thanks in advance for any input you might have to contribute...

To the best of my knowledge, you don't go looking for headhunters, they come looking for you. As in, companies hire them to try to lure existing employees (usually executives of some sort) away from their current jobs to come work for them instead. I've never heard of someone not already in a successful position being headhunted.

What you're looking for is maybe an employment agency.

Another major part as well as trying to locate the jobs your are after is also having the letters/resume to apply for those jobs, without these you generally dont get through the door these days with many people after same jobs,

What I did to find the job I do now in Research was to update my CV/Resume to try and stand out as much as possible without being in your face... modern layout with clean modern fonts like verdana, trajan, franklin gothic ... put all the relevent info at the start and kept the personal stuff till the end ... kept it to just 2 pages as all that many employers will want to read as they have to read through loads before switching off. Got some heavy duty paper ( similar thickness to sticking 3 normal sheets of paper together ) plus some A4 envelopes, dont fold your resume.

plus have a covering letter to accompany the resume in same text and layout stating why you want to work for that company, this you can draft up a template for in which you only need to tailor it for info on the separate companys after you have researched them a bit ( always worth researching the companys you are wanting to work for as it also helps you with some questions to ask if your lucky enough to get to interview stage )

Then if you can once typed up convert it to PDF format as most companys have acrobat but not all have MS word or have fonts etc you have so having it in PDF its a wysiwyg letter... then email it to companys you would like to work for.

I know my CV/Resume worked for me.. ok I did have experience in what some of the job entails but what I didnt have was a medical background but at the panel interview, one did have my cv in hand and I could tell they liked it, plus the research I did really helped at the interview as it answered many of their questions 100% plus gave me questions to ask them.. nothing worse than at the end of an interview when they ask "do you have any questions?" and you sit their quietly.

hope some of that helps and good luck in finding your ideal job :)

    Good advise Halo. :)

When searching for head hunter companies, search for "employment agency" or agencies in Google, and limit the search to your area by using "Advanced Search" & putting in all the major city names in your area in the "Any of these words" field.

Most employment agencies play both sides of the fence. They're commonly contracted by various companies to find new employees, but they also take promising job searchers and try to plug them into jobs that they have available. They all work for fees, and reputable ones earn their fees from the companies, NOT from the job searchers, so don't sign up with one that wants you to pay.

As Halo noted, the FIRST thing to do is get your resume in shape, since that's the first thing all of them will want. Both in print and online versions. .pdf is best, since it's virtually universal, but Word format (.doc) is next best, as almost all companies today use Word. If you're doing Word, make sure you pick all standard Word fonts, as any font that their systems don't have will revert to plain old Arial.

Your cover letter to the employment agencies should define what type of jobs you're interested in, since they'll want to plug you into anything they can fit you into, and not all of those will be jobs you may want.

    Good hunting! :)

I've got a good resume typed up... luckily my older sister who was very successful after college was able to help me out and give me good advice about it...

i've been on a handful of interviews already and i've learned that im' very comfortable in such situations... i usually interview very well, which is a good thing... my last interview was with Progressive Insurance for a Claims Adjuster position... in my mind i was set to take the job if they offered it to me but they didn't...

but that is solid advice you guys have given, thanks

I wish you good luck in finding your dream job Midget... hope the searching goes well :)

Just locate all the companies locally that you would want to work for and hammer them with resumes either email or printed, also to the companies high on your list a few days after posting give them a call to see if they recieved it... always good to speak live to someone.

thank you! it's frustrating because i know that whatever i do i'm going to excel at it and be successful, i just need to accomplish that first step of securing a position that will allow me to do so... while i can't say 100% what position i'm looking for, i know that i do not want to do something that i am uninterested in just because the money is right...

i'm very good at communicating with people and i hold myself to very high standards in everything that i do, so i know my career will take off when i find my place, where ever that may be...
