I did all the research and i went to the reserve armory and thay told me that i most likely whould not be going to iraq....... "Risk is part of the game if you want to sit in that chair." ~Kirk.. Generations ;)

Captain Kirk is fictional, although risk is part of the game. No recruiter is going to tell you that you'll be going to war. Bur we're stretched thin, and a large percentage of the Reserves are serving, a huge number of them in Iraq. If you're willing to serve, full-time somewhere, and in Iraq quite possibly, go for it. But if you're kidding yourself that in today's world you'll for-sure be a 2 week-a-year Weekend Warrior, better think again.

    gt is right,,

but the ultimate choice is yours, just make it your decision, recruiters make a living & RANK by the numbers ;)

Make sure you choose your training like Lordelin said

As a mother, my first answer is oh my goodness, NO, don't do it.

Thinking it over, my answer would still be no. The risk is not worth it.
I am so proud of the men and women that are serving our country, but at this time, I don't think it advisable for anyone to join.
Would you even get enough training before being shipped over there?

At any rate, take care and God bless.

Yes, he'd get through training. Although the Army (I assume) Reserves don't train as intensely as regular Army, which doesn't train as intensely as the Marines. And that training makes a difference in survival skills. Marines are the toughest to kill, but they're also thrown into the toughest spots.

As far as joining, that's a personal decision, and a very honorable one. Somebody's got to do it. I just want him to make an informed decision with his eyes wide open.

Yes, GT, it is a very personal and honorable decision.
This week we are burying 3 Minnesotans who died in Iraq. I work with the mother of a soldier who died Aug. 6, 2003. I will never forget the phone call telling her to come home.

I guess I am a little biased with not wanting anyone to join. The "rules" our men and women are taught are not the same "rules" the enemy goes by.

I work with other mothers who sons are in Iraq yet. Hopefully, that phone call to come home never comes to any of them.

Best thing I ever did. It led to me joining the regular army, where I spent a great nine years. Of course, we only had Northern Ireland to contend with as a dangerous posting. Not Iraq.

If you are interested, look into the Coast Guard reserves, my father's friend is a member, and he enjoys it thouroughly. it's a bit more lax apparently, with many great opportunities, and its the coast guard--so as far as I know, you wont be going to Iraq, yet you still get to serve an important part in protecting our country.

The coast guard does have a few cutters, searching the water ways over there…one of my nephew’s, spent three years on active duty with the coast guard, and on one cruise, half of the ship was made up of guard members……
…I spent 18 years in the air force reserve…it’s almost like the guard….six months of training, with basic, then ait for training in your specialty….
But, with them thinking of the draft again, those in the reserve, will most likely serve a tour or two, of active duty….wobbles

Ace, I am going to assume you are talking about the Army Reserves and not the Air or Marine Reserves. There is a lot to consider before you join. The reserves are far from the weekend warrior and two weeks a year that it use to be. They train almost as hard as the active force in some cases. And, not to scare you away, but the army is starting to conduct 'live fire' exercises and convoy training. They are more than serious about this. I have spent the better part of my life in both the active world and the Air National Guard. I have seen a lot of places and worked some damn long hours. I have lost friends in combat. I have made friends with every branch of service you can name. I have spent nights helping put kids back together and shared both cigarettes and food with those comming in from the field. The comraderie you get cannot be described. But i drone on. i agree with G.T. that is an honorable profession. However it is not for everyone. I wish you the best with whatever your decision is.

as a mother who's son went to iraq and son in law is returning to iraq... and learned more than any one should.. regular army is deployed to iraq for 1 years duration.. reserve and guard are forced into 18 month to 2 year in suration. :( air force does a 6 month rotation in there..
you make you choice... make sure your MOS is gaurenteed(sp). you will do a full basic training. good luck.. and if you do choose to join.. (((Ace)))

Listen to Fraz and GT. If you want in, expect to go to Iraq. My wife's cousin joined the reserves a few months ago. They told him the same thing they told you, guess what happened next.. This is a HUGE decision. You sign the line prepare to visit a far away land.
