joystick stops pc from booting up

If my USB joystick (or USB connected printer) is left plugged in, the PC will not boot up past the mobo splashscreen. Unplugging and then switching on cures this. The printer is no problem - i just make sure it's off - but the joystick is a nuisance as Win7 wants to load device drivers when I plug it in. I've cleared the CMOS and set boot up priority to HDD. Can't see anything else in the BIOS to change. It's as if the mobo is looking for an OS on USB ports. Keyboard is USB but that's not a problem! Mobo is ASUS P5QL PRO. Any ideas?
