Hope this is the correct place for this...

I've had Windows 8/8.1 for about 2 years now and I have never used the Start page unless I have to, I just stick to desktop. I've always wondered why? Why the Start page? Because the personalisation with the background, colour, favourite apps etc. is what you've always been able to do with desktop right?

I understand the effort of trying to get their phones, tablets etc. all linked and looking identical, but it just seems pointless when you have the option of desktop.

On top of which desktop gives one more freedom in terms of organisation and easy access. Which does lead me to a bit more serious question lol: Skype, as far as I have been able I can only get Skype as an app on the start page, which means it doesn't load on the desktop. It now seems when doing it like this I can only have up to 4 'apps' displayed at any one time, horizontally. Now is there a way to get Skype onto my desktop so I can resize it how I see fit, failing that to display 'apps' vertically?
Also Skype only seems to allow me to log in with a Windows Live account which is fine for me but occasionally my friends want to borrow my laptop for Skype for whatever reasons, and may not of been using a Live account for their Skype. Anyone know a way around this?

    Thanks in advance :)

    Hi

have you tried downloading and installing Skype for desktop?
    Download HERE

on the Start page it was indeed to mirror Phone, Xbox etc as in unified look, but more so it took over and was basically the Start Menu from XP, W7 is a tile format, your favoured apps in an easy to find start place, like it or hate it, everyone has their opinions of it.

Lol I hadn't gone onto check Skype site in ages, I am a div :-o

Fair enough if that's all they were going for with start page I guess, in regards to apps in 'an easy to find place' but I would still argue desktop is easier to get at them, but each to there own like you said :)
