I have a 40GB slave on my PC right now. I want to format that drive in windows, then install some stuff on there.

Q: Later if I wanted to install an OS on it, would I be able to keep all the stuff on the HD as long as I didnt reformat or would I have to install the OS first?

I believe you wouldn't be able to keep the stuff on the hard drive, unless your installing Linux, and you mananually partition. Though I could be wrong. Let us know what os your thinking of anyways.

as long as you don't format the drive when installing XP then yes, the files will remain and the original file structure will be intact. XP has an option in setup not to format the drive.

Hmm... I never knew XP had that option.

Hi, Actually XP can make it's own partition and gives you the choice of doing so. So you could designate a partition of say 5 goes. To cover the install and have your date on the other partition.

If you are only talking data it would be alright but programs would have to be installed into the OS you chose. Peace Mal

Im going to blame it all on you, BASTARDS!!!!

Make a b*tch story short, it would not let me get into windows on my pri drive, so I had to repair windows:(

So it didnt work out too well, I will have to play with it a little more later.

On a side note, after the repair I cant get windows to detect my USB mouse and keyboard. It works at start up but I lose them both when windows starts, I dont recall having this problem in the past, any ideas?

Questions, Questions I know BUT I like Questions...............

What OS is installed on your master HD? and did you install XP pro on the slave?

ON a repair of windows if you may need to install any updates & drivers as the repair may have overwritten the new ones with old drivers, another possible thing to do is to delete USB from Device Manager then restart & let Win find the hardware again.

XP Pro on the Pri and installing XP Pro on the slave.

After the repair I did notice that the updates and drivers were gone:( After SP1 and a few other things it wasnt working too well, so I said f**k it and did a reformat with 2K Pro this time.

Dual Booting XP and XP doesnt work AFAIK ( tried it after the question came up last week, also did a search of the net to see if others had cracked it but not found anything that would work )

XP and 2K is a good compromise tho ;)

If anyone knows how to dual boot XP & XP please feel free to enlighten me :)

[edit] I would imagine dual booting may just infringe the licence or installing XP more than once unless you have a multi copy licence [/edit]

I don't think it would violate copyright Halo. IIRC, their EULA just limits you to using it on one computer, no mention of just one instance. They obviously didn't plan for it in their install routine though.

Cheers for the info G.T :)

I never thought of it that way........ teaches me to read the EULAs once in a while ;)

HI. XP pro can be used more than once but Home is only allowed to be used once.

I even argued with MS about it when I tried to do it. I had 2 drives and wanted to have the OS on both drives.

I tried it but had trouble as the second OS only seemed to work about once before stuffing up. Peace Mal
