  1. i was wondering how do you do the downloads.

do you go round the web and link to those downloads or do your load them off the web or can you upload them to you and you display them.?

    sorry had to ask.

    copyright etc.

    noob question./.

You should be able to click on the program you want to download, then it will open a new page to download that piece of software, then over on the right side, you click on the location you want to download from!!

Good question. I'm curious as well because I sometimes will post programs to my site for friends, etc to download (like spywareblaster for example).

Is it OK to do this, or am I violating some copyright? I'm not taking credit for the program, just trying to make the download/install process easier for non-tech family/friends.

    Lets see if I understand.

Many programs are free to distribute. Companies like people linking to them, it only makes them more popular. It is very rare, but it does happen, that someone does not want their file linked to, nor distributed.

I personally monitor about 5,000 company websites every 4 hours, plus watch about 10 websites to find new releases. We then download them and upload them to our servers for you to download.

    Did I answer your question.

  6. no not download hosting

  7. do you not ask them for there permission before you download and use them or ?

Are you asking if a person coming to MG to download something has to have permission from the company that owns it before downloading? Short answer is no. Part of downloading any software is to check that you accept the user agreement, or your installation will not continue if you do not.

If you're asking if we need to get permission from MG before downloading, then the answer is definitely no. MG is the host rather than the software copyright holder, they don't care if you download or not.

If that's not what you're asking, could you please try to be more clear? There have been three interpretations of what you could be asking thus far, and complete sentences would be helpful.

OK I'm gonna have a shot now lol.
I first thought they meant downloading from this site, but now I think it's uploading the downloads to their website and allowing other users to download.

  10. so if i download a program from another website and post it on my website for download do i need permission from the program owner to do this?

i have a prgram with copyright on it and was thinking of uploading it to the web for download and was told that people will download it and put it on there website for download ( breaking the law ) with out my permission.

    Ahhhh I'll bite.....

If you keep the files intact and dont change anything, also link to the Home Page of the software developer, then yes as MA said earlier its not a problem for 99% of software dev's as they only want to get their software to a broad audience and the more sites they are located on for download the better ( free advertising is worth its weight in gold ) .. then you will always have some that will not want you to have their software on your server for download, even if you have linked to them or not changed the files in any way.

You could always just out of courtesy, email the developer and ask?

If you have strick notices ( visible ) about not having your software for download on any other site than your own, then yes they would be breaking your copyright..... I hope you dont have a full time job as well as you would will be searching the net each day to try and locate said software on download sites and have them remove it ;)

Then as a question from me... why wouldnt you want your software available to the masses, dont want to be rude ( and I hope you dont take it this way as its not ment to be ) but is your website popular? as popular as say Majorgeeks, Download.com, Tucows, Utility Geek etc

Without the mass hits that these above sites generate your software wont get seen if you hide it away, thus not generating any revenue for you to continue development.

  14. ok.

sorry to be such a pain.

so if i go round the web and download software and put it on my website i have to include a link to the original owner ?
    i think thats write.

and if the owner objects then remove it.

only i will send the software and was hoping he would link back to me.

YES.. that is a customary thing to do, courtesy or netiquette whatever you want to call it, it will also assist in not having the original owners wanting their software removed from your site.

sorry cannot de-cypher what your getting at here 100%? but if I get the gist its you want to send the software to a download website but have them not host the file but link direct to you for download? possible but you would have to as the webmaster/owner of that site if they are willing to do that.

  16. thanks i will send the files out now and get them to link back to my web site but supply them with the program for there website.

and while im at it i will do a little downloads section where people can download the programs asociated with that game like utils etc/
and if they do not want it there then they can ask for it to be removed .

    nice 1

    thanks guys .
