Hi. I just installed Win 7 Pro (64-bit) on my computer. The process went without problem. However, I have just made a stupid, noob mistake. When I tried to open a .lnk file copied from my old computer, the machine asked me what program I wanted to use to open it. I said NotePad, and told it to use NotePad to open all files with the .lnk extension. Now, every link opens using Note, which is a disaster. I tried returning to a Restore Point pre-mistake. I received an error message stating the restore could not be done, probably because of an anti-virus program. I have tried everything there that could be tried, but I'm hoping there may be a simple way to just remove my association of .lnk files with NotePad. Hope someone can help me out.

Does the ASSOC command still exist in Windows 7?

Open a Command Prompt and type assoc /?

If it gives you instructions how to use it, then it still exists. If so, type assoc .lnk

This would give you the current file association.

To correct it, type assoc .lnk=lnkfile

    That should do it.
