    hi,

i ran all your procedures. malwarebytes was being interpretted by avg as a trojan psw.banker5. i read that this is a false positive from avg and that i need to run mbam-clean.exe and reinstall it.

anyway, here are my logs for your review. please feel free to remove anything on my registry that is not necessary to the normal functioning of a computer.

thanks for everything you all do!

Did you rename combofix because it wouldn't run until you did so?

Also you are running it from the wrong location anyway:

    Running from: E:\Combo.exe

You should be running it directly from your desktop. Please move it there before we continue.

The version of MGTools that you have downloaded and run is out of date. So you will need to do the below to get yourself the most current version installed:

Go to this MGTools and download the new version of MGtools.exe. Overwrite your previous MGtools.exe file with this one.

Run the new MGTools.exe and attach the C:\mglogs.zip that it produces into your next reply here.

    Thanks

    Hi Kes,

I don't know why ComboFix didnt have the name it should. It may have been a typo but I don't recall any difficulty installing it.

I ran everything except MGTools from my flash drive because I have had the experience that sometimes a virus will uninstall or interfere with malware removal.

So today, I installed it on my desktop and ran it. I wont' give you all the gory details of the mission this was but i left my computer at a friend's house where i was working on it "scanning". The blue DOS screen showed nothing. All it said was that it should take less than 10 minutes unless the computer was badly infected. Is it supposed to do that? What do I do if when I get there tomorrow, it's still on the same screen doing the same thing?

    Thanks.

    Hi Kes,

When I got back to my computer, about 10 hours later, the scan was still 'running'. I got out of it and ran a suggestion that I saw on another site. I downloaded SP2 from Microsoft, saved it on my desktop, and dragged and dropped it on the ComboFix icon. It started Combofix which updated itself, attempted to create a restore point, and started to scan. That was about 15 minutes ago and it's still 'scanning'. I actually don't think it's doing anything. The computer show know sign of doing anything.

Any help with this would be great. For now, I"m going to cancel Combofix, which I've tried to uninstall as per Chaslang's instructions on another post, but it gave me an error message about the directory address being wrong, though it wasn't, and would not uninstall.

What I'm going to do is run MGLogs and send it to you from my computer, the one I've been trying to clean, and await your instructions.

Thank you so much for everything you do. I've been coming to this site now for a few years, and I'm always impressed by you guys.

Please run both MBAM and SAS and first update them then run scans > fix anything it finds and attach logs from both programs into your next reply here as well as the mglogs.zip that I will need.

This is because you renamed it as I pointed out.

yes please, do attach the log from the very latest version of MGTools which I provided a link for in my above post.

    You're welcome :)

i ran everything in safe mode because i have found that infections are often found that were not found before. because i have run both SAS and MBAM multiple times, i have multiple logs. i will include the first and the last of these unless you need the others.

also, i was finally able to run combofix and ran mgtools again.

i look forward to your comments.

    1. Please disable all anti-virus and anti-spyware programs while we do the following (re-enable when you are finished):

Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator). This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

    After clicking Fix exit HJT.

    2. Now we need to use ComboFix
    • Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
      • If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    • Also make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware...etc) or they may get in the way of allowing ComboFix to run properly.
    • If ComboFix tells you it needs to update to a new version, make sure you allow it to update.
    • Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below quote box. Ensure you scroll down to select ALL the lines:
    Code:
    KILLALL::

    Driver::
    IISE

    DirLook::
    C:\0bc270525340aa5c59b7359b

    File::
    c:\windows\system32\ezsidmv.dat
    c:\windows\bwUnin-8.1.1.50-8876480SL.exe
    c:\docume~1\AWESOM~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\IISE.exe
    c:\windows\system32\ezsidmv.dat

    • Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    • At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    • You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    • Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe

      http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v666/sUBs/CFScriptB-4.gif

    • Follow the prompts.
    • When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    • I will ask for this log below

    Note:

Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

    3. Please download the avg removal tool

Make sure you also delete any AVG folders in Program Files and Docs & Settings/Application Data directories.

You should then restart your system and run 'CCleaner'

    4. Also delete all files in the below bold folders except ones from the current date (Windows will not let you delete the files from the current day).

    • C:\WINDOWS\Temp
    • C:\Documents and Settings\Awesomest Mom\Local Settings\TEMP

    5. Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it. Then attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file that will be created by running this and also attach the log from Combofix.

    6. Let us know of any problems you may have encountered with the above instructions and also let me know how things are running now!

IMPORTANT: You need to ensure that you get some anti-virus installed on this machine. We need to clean up from remnants of avg that you once had installed.

ok. i did everything as carefully as my A.D.D. brain could muster. attached are the logs.

prior to your post, i had used avg remover. i did it again because obviously you found something. i used windows explorer to find everything avg and deleted it. there were 2 things that i were not related to AVG. hopefully everything else was.

when i ran ccleaner, i used it to scan my registry, temp files, etc, and find errors as i found no pending avg folders.

i am aware that i don't have antivirus software. i had avira and bought the premium version to support the cause, but it burdened my system tremendously. i'm not sure why. once i'm finished with this cleaning, i'll either be giving it another opportunity or i'll be using avg 9, unless you have another suggestion.

    thanks as always.

    Your logs are clean :)

Yes, get yourself some Anti Virus installed but I would advise you to steer clear of avg9, if you think Avira was slowing you down, avg will do so even more as lately it has become far too much of a resource hog.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we used Pocket Killbox during your cleanup, do the below
      • Run Pocket Killbox and select File, Cleanup, Delete All Backups
    3. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /u
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /u, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    4. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    5. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    6. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    7. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    8. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    9. If you are running Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures in step 3 the READ ME for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    10. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:

    thank you again.

After all this, my computer is still incredibly slow.

I've run all the scans again in safe mode. Nothing. A techie friend suggested i might have a boot sector virus. i ran the Avira Rescue CD. Nothing. I ran Norman Malware Cleaner in safe mode. it found Suspicious_Gen2.AEEY which was deleted.

Here's my problem. From the moment i power up to the login screen, it takes about 3 1/2 minutes. then i login and it takes 4 minutes to load only the basics - no IM, no email, no nothing - just drives and security programs. when i open Firefox for the first time, it takes about 4 minutes to load. I've actually timed these things.

    Any ideas?

thanks so much for any advice you can offer.

It would confuse you and I both if we continued on in this thread when you have new problems. So might I suggest you create a new thread in malware and I will close this thread.

We'll be the judges of that :) Make a new thread and attach all of the requested logs as usual. Skip anything that you cannot do or have issues with, make a note of it and proceed on.

    Thanks
    Kes13!
