Just Doesn't Have the Speed Anymore

About six months ago I went through the steps to clean my computer and was successful. I just went through them again now and nothing comes up that isn't negligable. Yet, when I run programs like Shredder 9 it doesn't run nearly as fast as it did a year ago. At the time I did find a Trojan and removed it but I do not remember what kind it was.

This is the log I have, if anyone knows what I can do to speed my computer back up I would appreciate it.

    Welcome to Majorgeeks!

Not sure what you are referring to but you did not run our cleaning steps! In addition, slow PCs do not necessarily have to be caused by malware.

Please follow our standard cleaning procedures which are necessary for us to provide you support. Also there are steps included for installing, running, and posting HijackThis logs as attachments.
    • Run ALL the steps in this Sticky thread READ & RUN ME FIRST Before Asking for Support
    • Make sure you check version numbers and get all updates.
    • Very Important: Make sure you tell us the results from running the tutorial...was anything found? Were you unable to complete any of the scans?...Were you unable to download any of the tools?...Did you do the on-line scans as suggested? etc.
    • After doing ALL of the above you still have a problem make sure you have booted to normal mode and run the steps in the below link to properly use HijackThis and attach a log:
    Downloading, Installing, and Running HijackThis

Make sure you also rename HijackThis.exe as suggested in the procedures. Use analyse.exe for the new name. This is very important due to some new infections going around.

    • When you return to make your next post, make sure you attach the following logs and that you have run these scans in the following order too:
      • CounterSpy - ONLY IF you were not able to run Windows Defender
      • Bitdefender - from step 6
      • Panda Scan - from step 6
      • runkeys.txt - the log from GetRunKey.bat
      • newfiles.txt - the log from ShowNew.bat
      • HijackThis
NOTE: You can only attach 3 files in a single message so it will require that you use two messages to attach all of these logs!

Ok. Think I got it right this time.

My computer has been running abnormally slow for the past few months. It is almost impossible to run Shredder Chess on it these days. I have followed the instructions as given and believe my computer to be in a state where you can help.

The PandaActiveScan did not find anything and I was unable to "See Report".

I have also noticed that occationally the tool bar in the bottom right of my screen will flash a touch bigger and then back. As if an icon was there for a second but not long enough to tell what it is.

Let me know if i have forgotten something or done it wrong and I will correct.

    Thanks in advance.

Re: Ok. Think I got it right this time.

You should have stayed in your original thread which I'm merging you back to!

You also need to finish the rest of the instructions. You forgot the new HijackThis log that should be attach after completing the other steps in the READ ME. Also you must makes sure you install and rename HijackThis as requested in the READ ME. But don't attach the new log until working thru the rest of this message.

I still doubt that all of your speed problems are related to malware but we do have a couple things to fix! We will get to that after I ask a bunch of questions.
    • How much hard disk space is free and how large is your hard disk?
    • How much RAM do you have?
    • What is your Processor type and speed?
    • When is the last time you defragged the hard disk?
    • Why do you have something from Symantec still install if you are using AVG? Uninstall this: Symantec Network Drivers Update
    • Why do you have BitTorrent loading at startup? This leaves your PC open ALL the time for people to connect to and download from. Talk about slowing things down....well this will do it.
Now let's fix a couple hidden things!

Now Copy the bold text below to notepad. Save it as fixWLK.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.
Now reboot in safe mode and use Windows Explorer to delete the below if found (they may already be gone):
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\winsa32.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\ntfs64.exe

Now run Ccleaner (installed while running the READ ME FIRST).

    Now reboot in normal mode

Now attach a the below new logs and tell me how the above steps went.

    1. GetRunKey
    2. HJT

Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

    Ok,

My main harddrive is 11.7G with 2.6G free. I run 512 RAM and a Pent 4 1.5GHz chip.

It has been some time since I have defragged but I have just run one and it seems to have helped a little.

I do not know why Symantec and BitTorrent are still being run/installed, I uninstalled both those programs some time ago. I am not sure I was successfull at removing them but I gave it a go.

I was unsuccessful at finding the files you listed but was able to run the code you prescribed.

I am not sure what you mean by "running the read me first" when using CCCleaner. I may need some clarification with that.

Finally I have attached the files you requested. A lot of this is new to me and I appreciate you being patcient with me.

Look in Add/Remove Programs for the below and uninstall if found:
    Symantec Network Drivers Update

Now click on Start, then Run ... type services.msc into the box that opens up, and press 'OK'. On the page that opens, scroll down to Symantec Network Drivers Service ... then right click the entry, select 'Properties' and press 'Stop Service'. When it shows that it is stopped, next please set the 'Start-up Type' to 'Disabled'. Press 'OK' until you get back to Windows.

Next, run HJT, but instead of scanning, click on the "None of the above, just start the program" button at the bottom of the choices. At the lower right, click on the 'Config" button, and then the Misc tools' button ... select 'Delete an NT Service" ... copy/paste the following into the box that opens, and press "OK":

    SNDSrvc

If you receive any error messages just ignore them and continue.

Now exit HJT and reboot when it tells you it needs to.

After reboot attach a new HJT log and a new logs from ShowNew.
