My tower was infected with several viruses and rootkits, most of which seem to have been removed by using the procudures outlined in "Windows XP Cleaning Procedure". I was able to run all the tools except for 'RootRepeal'. I've attached all the logs from the other tools. Please have a tech superstar review them and let me know what else needs to be done to add finality to the cleanup. It appears to me as if the tower is running correctly now, but I'd like to be sure I'm not missing anything. I await your reply. Sincerely....

I would like to note the following link where I found another good methodology to removing malware issues that is very similiar in nature to the procedure here on MajorGeeks.com. I was fortunate to find it by googling the error WXP kept throwing up at me. I would greatly appreciate it if someone could review my logs and tell me what you think I should do. Very Sincerely, 'atypical tech freak' :)

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

Looks like you had a load of infections, including some very old ones from Home Search aka Only The Best Hijacker aka about:blank which are rare these days. You may have had this for a long time.

You also have the new Windows Police Pro (also has at least a dozen other names) which is what has messed up your permissions. And you also had a mixture of several other rootkits like TDSSserv and Braviax.

How did you get so badly infected? Have you been running without protection? Based on your logs, it appears you have no protection.

First please run Win32kDiag per the below:
    • Download this Win32kDiag and save to C:\Win32kDiag.exe. You must save it here!!!!
    • Click on Start->Run, and copy-paste the following command (the bolded text) into the "Open" box, and click OK. When it's finished, there will be a log called Win32kDiag.txt on your desktop. Please attach this log
    C:\win32kdiag.exe -f -r

Now uninstall the below old versions of software. If you don't find it or it will not uninstall, just continue:
    My Way Search Assistant

Now run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator). This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

    R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - *{CFBFAE00-17A6-11D0-99CB-00C04FD64497} - (no file)
    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {DBC80044-A445-435b-BC74-9C25C1C588A9} - (no file)
    O9 - Extra button: (no name) - {CD67F990-D8E9-11d2-98FE-00C0F0318AFE} - (no file)

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

Now we need to use ComboFix
    • Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
      • If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    • Also make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware...etc) or they may get in the way of allowing ComboFix to run properly.
    • If ComboFix tells you it has expired or need to be updated to a new version, make sure you allow it to update.
    • Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below quote box into it:
    • Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    • At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    • You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    • Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe
    • Follow the prompts.
    • When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    • I will ask for this log below
    Note:

Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

Now run Ccleaner. Only use the Run Cleaner button. Do not run anything else on any other forms.

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below logs:
    • C:\ComboFix.txt
    • C:\MGlogs.zip
Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

chaslang, thanks for your assistance. My brother put limewire on the machine while I wasn't looking... wonder how many files the RI__ has infected using that particular P2P program?

Anyhow, just finished your cleanup regimen and all seems to be well now. I've attached the logs for your review; let me know if you find any remaining culprits, thanks so much.

You're welcome. Your logs are clean.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we used Pocket Killbox during your cleanup, do the below
      • Run Pocket Killbox and select File, Cleanup, Delete All Backups
    3. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /u
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /u, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    4. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    5. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    6. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    7. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    8. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    9. If you are running Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures in step 3 the READ ME for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    10. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
