 Hey, looking for any suggestions in getting my mp3 collection back. I moved about 2500 files from one directory to another on the same drive, and now the songs won't play, and I cannot move or delete them. They still show up at their full size (about 10 gigs). I can't do anything with these files, I get either an error because another program is accessing them, or a system32.dll error. I've already tried a program that tries to move the files when I reboot, and they didn't go anywhere...it's like Windows can see them, but can't do anything about them. Any ideas?

Greetings and welcome to MajorGeeks! Hopefully someone here can help ye out! Though, I'll give it a shot! :)

What exact error are ye getting? Word for word.

What media player are ye using?
Reboot again, see if that helps.

If iTunes, you have to delete the playlist file in the iTunes directory in My Documents. As for Rhapsody, it is about the same, but more headaches. DRM is wonderful.

    Hi Thee fool, and thanks,

When I try to delete the file, I get a windows pop up that says "Cannot delete *******.mp3: Access is denied. Make sure that the disc is not full or write protected and that the file is not currently in use."

If I try to play the file with Windows Media Player it tells me "Windows Media Player cannot access the file. The file might be in use, you might not have access to the computer where the file is stored, or your proxy settings might not be correct."

I don't use Itunes, I just went to move all files in the folder to a different folder, I used Ctrl-X for cut, and Ctrl-V for paste in windows explorer, once the move was complete I cannot do anything with the files. I also downloaded a program that tries to move and delete the files on a reboot, and neither were successful.

Hehe, just incase this is a complete loss, I'm starting to download music like mad (I still have a list of all the files I've lost, the file list sitting in that directory). I'm currently using limewire and edonkey, are there any better networks out there?

    Try:

Click START, then RUN, then type in: msconfig (press enter).

uncheck the box "load startup items" (press ok), yes to reboot. Can you play the songs?

Also, what OS is this. I.E. xp, 2k, me, 98...etc...

    Thanks again theefool,

I tried what you said, and no, still no luck. I'm starting to wonder if it's an glitch in the operating system where the files were not completely moved...but they do show up at the same size, I just can't do anything with them. If I try to delete one I get an access is denied error.

I'm running Windows XP Media Center Edition 2002, with Service Pack 2. I'm on an HP DV2000t Laptop with a Pentium Core Duo 1.73 and a gig of ram.
