Just watched Donnie Darko

I am SO confused!!!

I'm so confused, I'm going to have to watch it again tomorow.

Who you callin names? According to the description you just watched a movie about a giant rabbit telling a highschool kid to be voilent lol. Sounds....... interesting.

 

LOL, yes, yes I did. It is a very weird film. It's so weird, it doesn't even have a real ending. Only really weird films can have no ending

 

or:

1. They wanted to make a sequel but never got enough money.

2. They ran short of money and couldn't afford enough film to literally film the ending.

 

They're artists, they don't have to concern themselves with pedestrian concerns like plot and an ending.

and I couldn't do it

I dont think anyone cuold really understand it without being on drugs or something

I just watched Eternal sunshine of a spotless mind
that was kinda messed up as well

 

I've seen Donnie Darko a couple of times.
It's a good movie, but I didn't find it confusing. (Probably because I've read alot of Sci-Fi's.)

 

The whole thing about Donnie Darko is that you take away from it, and understand it to be something personal to you and the way you were brought up and the things you believe in. Its not a straight forwards film with a beginning and an end and a strong 'this is what it was all about message.' Thats why you will never find Richard Kelly (the writer/director) tell you what it means... because what it means to you or I is different to what it means to him.
I recently got the screenplay book because it features amongst other things an in-depth interview with Richard Kelly. He explains that the Philosophy of Time Travel contents (that you can read on certain DVD releases, on the web, and that the Directors Cut of the film goes into) isn't so much him saying this is what it is all about. More it is him saying what it is about, to him. How he interprets the story he wrote and the world he created.

I think thats one of the things which makes the movie so brilliant. It means something different to different people.

And the soundtrack is awesome! I heard the Mad World song when it was at Number 1 in the UK charts last xmas and fell in love with it. MIchael Andrews and Gary Jules make it and the lyrics just fit perfectly to the mood and tone of the film at the end. (ironically I changed my sig before this thread came up... )

 

I'd say that after a while of thinking about the film, I understand it a little more. It's one of those films you come out of the cinema thinking "What was that all about?" then the next day you start to realise what it was all about.

Oh yes and Manipulated Living is a GREAT track

 

It's a good movie. The director's cut came out this summer in North America in very, very limited release. It bombed in theatres in 2001 but had such a cult following on DVD and VHS that the director just had to show it in theatres the way he originaly wanted to.

 

I cant find the Director's Cut DVD anywhere........has it been released yet, or is it out. I really want to get that DVD.
It is a great movie, Top Ten, but not Top Five

I just saw that the Directors Cut was available in the UK this evening... Gonna have to put that on my wish list... Not sure about when the release is in the US - I was surprised not to find it on Amazon just now. I think I read somewhere that a release was being coincided with Haloween so it may be the end of this month?

 

Just watched it again... it makes much more sense now.

Oh and drew barrymore!!!! My Holywood star-match! (according to some test someone made me take a while ago)

The Director's Cut just came out IN THEATRES this past summer in North America.

It contains 20 minutes of previously unseen footage and enhanced special effects.

When does it come out on DVD? I don't know.

 

It's a cool site. Different, but nonetheless cool.
