Hello to all you seasoned forum posters,I am not at all computer savvy,I have an
old HP laptop which I bumble along with.I was directed to your site by a software company specialising in 'redirect' problems as he didn't think my problem would be covered by his software.
My problem is that I am inundated with advertising, mainly computer software packages but things like airline ticket sales, games, prize winning some soft porn sites, you name it ,they cut across everything, and don't respond when I try to remove them, all very annoying, the laptop is also very slow and I keep getting told that 'internet explorer' is not responding,I use Maxthon cloud, whatever that is,anyway just thought I'd see if your experts could point me in the right direction before I decide to wipe the hardrive and start from scratch to see if that corrects the problem,Oh,I have microsoft security essentials installed and it shows everything to be clean.
Anyway its late here in France and I'm off to nodland, will tune in again tommorow, goodnight.

As Nick said, it sounds like your computer is infected with malware. If I were you, I would go through our Removal procedures here: READ & RUN ME FIRST Malware Removal Guide (incl. spyware, virus, trojan, hijacker) and then post your logs in a new thread in Malware.

You mentioned wiping your harddrive and starting over. I'd try to clean first. Our experts will go through your logs and guide you in the removal process after they see your logs.

    NickT,plodr and LauraR,
Thanks for your interest and the swift reply,so the consensus opinion is that I probably have a malware issue and I should follow the proceedure for removing the bug as outlined on your intro page?.
I will certainly have a stab at following the instructions but I have very limited computer abilities,I find the terminology used by you techies in itself quite intimidating, anyway enough whining, upward and onward.
    many thanks TonyH

Have had a look at the anti malware protocol on the intro page and it does I'm afraid baffle me,I do not understand most of the terminology but have noted some antimalware packages for downloading, are these not considered to be powerful enough to combat problems such as mine?,your thoughts will be appreciated.

    Hi Tony

It may look baffling but its not so bad if you do one step at a time, all they are, are a set of applications/scanners to run and gain logs, which are saved locally on your PC,

The thing is that while many anti-malware scanners will pick up most malware, there are the ones that need a manual professional eye to review the logs and give you some manual removal instruction to fully remove the malware, as malware f not removed fully, will re-infect your PC again and again.

So read through that first page and if your issues are not as seems a slow PC then skip Step 1 to Step 2 and make sure you don't have multiple anti-virus software installed, if you do uninstall all of them for now, then move to Step 3, 4 and 5

    Then choose your Windows version in Step 6 and run the guide again line by line, start a new thread in the Malware forum and attach the logs, some guidance below;

Ok,many thanks for your advice,I'll try to be brave, bite the bullet and go for it mister, but I hope you won't get too brassed off with me if I keep mithering you for guidance,I mean, everyone keeps on about posting a log?,well you see I've already fallen at the first fence having never posted one before but one step at a time as you say,got to do something though its becoming a real pain in the butt.
    thanks TonyH

Tony, if you follow everything step by step you'll find that it's outlined pretty well. There's even a video posted to show you how to post a log. It's not hard at all, you'll just need patience. I'm telling you this as someone who's just gone through it.

More encouragement to go through the guide and take it step by step. And by all means ask for help, if you need it.

But truly, the guide looks a lot more daunting than it really is. It's very thorough, you see, so it has to say a lot to get you from start to finish.

However, it's VERY GOOD! From a person who had a computer only starting in Safe Mode until one step of the guide dragged a rootkit off the system and let the computer start normally thereafter.

    Sorry,its me again already,
It seems the first action necessary to help speed up a slow machine is to uninstall unwanted or superfluous programmes which seems very logical, however I note that on my machine I have 125 programmes to choose from, how on earth
I have managed to accumulate such a large number I have no idea,I don't even know what the function of these multivarious programmes is,so uninstalling might be a little dangerous to the running of the laptop I would have thought??,how do I make the decision about which ones to chop, which ones are necessary for the basic running of the machine,my uses are pretty simple,(as befits a simple mind),
Emails, shopping, bit of research,no photographs,no music or films, so do I need to post a list of these programmes for advice from you on which should be deleted.

    regards TonyH

Post some names. We can't guess what 125 programs are installed.
