jv16 PowerTools unsure if still okay to use?

I've used jv16 PowerTools over the years and always found it could solve problems that no other software could, at least no other software that I have come across. However on reading some posts on MG and over at Softpedia (25 reviews over there) I get the feeling jv16 PowerTools may not be the best program of its type for use on Windows 8.

Has anyone here had any recent experience with the "Lite" version of jv16 PowerTools on Windows 8.0 Home Edition OS?

I know from my own past experience that jv16 PowerTools can mess things up if you are not VERY careful with what you delete.

The thing I liked about jv16 PowerTools was that it could drill down so deeply into the registry and display every single entry about a particular program.

Can anyone recommend a FREE program that does what jv16 PowerTools could do but is definitely more suitable for use with Windows 8.0?

Programs I currently use to help keep my system running smoothly and or remove unwanted leftovers from the registry and folders are CCleaner Pro, Nortons Utilities 16 and Revo Uninstaller Pro.

    Thanks.

PS. I've had problems with WiseCare 365 so will not consider using that program.

PSCO2007 - Already have SAS and MBam (which has been playing up lately, have had to run Chameleon a few times to restore web protection), and don't see a need for TFC as I use CCleaner. Also, I have WOT and Norton Safe Web, so I feel okay in that regard.

So you don't know of a free alternative to JV16 Power Tools?

There are many, but I won't use anything that messes with the registry.

That's only a recipe for disaster.

    Sorry.

JoeRay12 - I occasionally install a program I think may be useful. I trace the install with Revo Uninstaller Pro. But sometimes either it misses something or maybe I do forget to trace the install. This happened recently with WiseCare 365 Pro giveaway. I didn't really like the program so uninstalled it shortly after installing. Then, just the other day I had a "BAD_POOL_HEADER" crash. I ran "WhoCrashed" and it claimed "wisetdifw64.sys" was the possible culprit. On searching for that file I also found three others left behind by WiseCare 365 in the Windows folder. I believe the crash was something to do with wisetdifw64.sys trying to access memory. This incident made me recall JV16 as in the past I often ran it to track down any leftover files after an uninstall, which it could always do, but ordinary cleaners don't find those files. That's why I would like a preferably freeware program that has the power of JV16.

Thanks for mentioning Spybot S&D and SpywareBlaster. I used to use them with XP but have never used them with Windows 8, so I'll take a look.

I just visited Macecraft Software's website and PowerTools Lite is very limited in what it can do. What features/functions exactly are you looking for? :confused

Complete scan for file leftovers, specific file search and thorough registry scan and search with full information about files and registry entries including recommendation as to whether safe to remove or not safe.

The last JV16 I used was 2011 version and, just like all the earlier versions, it was a very capable program. I always performed a backup prior to removing anything. Never had any major problem. I think some people get into trouble with power programs because they accept any recommendation from the program. I always examined each item carefully and if in doubt left them alone.

From what I've been reading on several websites, JV16 has not kept up with the times and is not suitable for use with Windows 8. Such a shame if that is the case, and likewise if the current "Lite" version is just a crippled version of the full program.

Basically, I do like being able to decide what files/ registry entries to keep or remove, but using something like regedit is just tedious.

I noticed you are using Revo Uninstaller Pro. It's an excellant program. However, if you want to use a registry cleaner, I'm going to recommend Eusing Free Registry Cleaner 3.5

While I no longer bother to clean the registry, I did use Eusing for a number of years. Next to every 'obsolete' registry entry identified by the program, you will see the location of where the file/folder was. Unhiding all files and folders, you can navigate to the location and double-check.

Read the Editor's Note on the details page.

If you want to leave no trace of an uninstalled program, invest in Ashampoo Uninstaller, with which you install/uninstall a program. I have been using it for more than 5 years. Sign up for a free Ashampoo account, and you'll be notified of special offers. It's worth it.
