Okay , so i was given a JVC GR-DVL520U and it uses miniDV's and SD Memory , it says on the description of the CamCorder "Video format: DV format (SD mode), Mini DV cassette" but i cant record in Memory mode with the SD Card.

As far as I know, the memory card is for when you take still pictures. I have a few JVCs, (not this model) and they have a slider switch, so you can select memory card or tape.

From what I know of this type of camcorder, with it switched to 'memory card', you can take stills which are stored on the card. You can then connect via USB and save them on a computer. In 'tape' mode, video and stills are recorded on the tape. Video needs to be transferred to a computer via firewire, (you can try USB but it tends to drop frames and ruin the video).

When the "Memory Mode" is selected, still photographs can be taken are are saved directly to the SD card.

However, when in the "Video Mode", you can still take still photographs. But, in this mode, the still photograph is saved to tape. Not the SD card.
