kardphisher

Starting last night I'm suddenly having a problem with my computer, telling me that my version of Windows needs to be reactivated. At first it told me I had three days, then I ran MWB and SAS, had to restart, and then it tells me I have to reactivate immediately or it logs me off (after of course asking for credit card info, as if I wasn't sure of its state as a virus already).

I can boot in safety mode, but have only been able to boot normally once since then, where I did all the malware scans (to be attached). In addition to all the processes in the RUN ME FIRST guide, I've also ran spywareblaster, kaspersky, mcafee, and spyware doctor (free trial) just in case they'd find something the others didn't. Spyware doctor did find a few issues, but as it's the free trial it wouldn't remove them (though I'll attach its findings as well).

I ran across many sites that gave directions for deleting kardphisher files and registry keys, (like this one and this one) but I'm not entirely comfortable with doing that on my own, and while this problem sounds the same the screencaps don't exactly match what is popping up in my computer (though most of the screencaps are circa 2007).

If I ever manage to log back into my computer I'll post a screencap of the window I can see once logged into a user (there's a different one at start-up).

Here be the other files. I've run all my regular scanners again to see if they picked anything else up, but they're all running clean now, despite my still having the problem.

It did not find anything. Those are valid registry keys used by ComboFix and other tools that run GMER's catchme process to look for rootkits. You need to immeditately uninstall Spyware Doctor and then reboot. Do this now while I look thru your logs. Why do you use both a backup service from Major Geeks and from McAfee.

If is possible that your McAfee software may need to be uninstalled. We shall see.

You have some files and folders with illegal dates that need to be removed. One of them is for Malwarebytes. Thus you need to uninstall Malwarebytes now since when I delete the bad folder, it will break it. Do not reinstall it yet.

Also if Browser Defender 2.0.6.1 was not uninstalled when you uninstalled SpywareDoctor then uninstall it now.

Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator). This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:
    O18 - Filter: x-sdch - (no CLSID) - (no file)

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

Now we need to use ComboFix to remove a bunch of malware files.
    • Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
      • If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    • Also make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware...etc) or they may get in the way of allowing ComboFix to run properly.
    • If ComboFix tells you it has expired or need to be updated to a new version, make sure you allow it to update.
    • Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below quote box into it:
    • Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    • At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    • You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    • Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe
    • Follow the prompts.
    • When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    • I will ask for this log below
    Note:

Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

Now run Ccleaner. Only use the Run Cleaner button. Do not run anything else on any other forms.

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below logs:
    • C:\ComboFix.txt
    • C:\MGlogs.zip
Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

As of now everything mentioned is uninstalled, but I need to double check - is it okay to run through the rest in safe mode? I've been trying for the last half-hour or so but can't log in to that computer normally (I'm using another one for posting), though as my luck goes I'll probably be able to in the next five minutes, just since I asked :p

As far as the online backup, the McAfee version just came with the newest update, which just downloaded recently. It's installed but not registered and configured (I hadn't even had the chance to look at it until tonight) so it's not up and running yet. Does it matter if I use both if I'm using them for different files? (i.e. one for documents and one for digital art)

Yes if that is all you can use. It would be best to have the followup new log from MGtools from normal boot mode if possiblen but safe mode is better than nothing.

If you don't mind the excess baggage/performance hit by having all these processes running from McAfee.... well that is your choice. It is not a malware issue.

Still haven't been able to boot to normal mode, so both logs here are from safe mode.

Uninstall the below old versions of software:
    Java(TM) 6 Update 18

Now we need to use ComboFix
    • Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
      • If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    • Also make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware...etc) or they may get in the way of allowing ComboFix to run properly.

    • I will ask for this log below
    Note:

Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

After reboot, now install the current version of Sun Java from: Sun Java Runtime Environment

If still having a problem booting in normal boot mode, describe exactly what happens.

Sorry for the delay. My internet decided it didn't feel like working the past couple days - it's moody like that.

Logs attached here as requested. Additionally, the only way I could log into my computer was to just follow through the steps and reactivate my Windows. I tried by phone and their system was down, so I tried again later and it actually went through, no other questions or gimmicks. Makes me wonder if I was off the mark in the first place, but I had never heard of Windows having to be reactivated after months (if not years) of use. The only thing I can think of is that possibly the malware affected my system to the point of instability? I had to redo all my settings in firefox as well. Just not sure. At least I'm able to use my computer now, even if I am a bit leery about its security at this point.

It happens! Sometimes not even due to malware.

    Your logs are clean.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    3. Go back to step 6 oof the READ ME and renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it.
    4. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    5. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    6. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    7. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    8. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders
related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    9. If you are running Win 7, Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures pointed to by step 7 of the READ ME
for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    10. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
