Kazaa, or not to Kazaa?

    I am really confused what they are saying about downloading music from Kazaa and other file sharing sites...is it safe or not? One minute I hear that the industry can no longer stop people from doing this, but then, on the news I hear they are still filing suits against users. I have Kazaa loaded on my computer, but have not used it to download in weeks. I want to continue, but not sure it is safe. Is there better or safer sites to download music from? Somehow, something happened to my Kazaa, cause when I was going to download a song, I got the message...You have installed part of Kazaa Media Desktop that is needed to run. Please reload Kazaa Media Desktop from Kazaa.com.....so I do not know how this happened, but I was not going to go through with it if all is unsafe and illegal or too risky. What is everyone else doing now? Taking chances? Thanks for the help and advice.

    Positive:
    Free music.

    Negatives:
    Spyware and other scum and adware
    You're stealing
    Viruses are rampant on there now
    Risk of being arrested since its monitored

    You may have run a spyware program that disabled Kazaa which is why it does not work. There are other options like Morpheous or WinMX http://www.majorgeeks.com/download2230.html but I cant say with authority. I used to download MP3's,(when it was REALLY cool and free via FTP and IRC channels) but have not in many, many years since it became popular. I sure would not do it now for reasons mentioned above.

    Okay, thanks, I agree...I will keep away from Kazaa and other free sites. One question for you all, which pay site is best? I would like one with a lot of variety since I am not a teenager who wants just whats hot today, lol!

    You need to look to see whats available, there is no one perfect network for anyone person and file sharing remains because their prices still stink. 99 cents a song is too much when theres no store, no middle man, not trucks delivering, etc. This music biz online is in its infancy and since you have corporations on both sides, it will be years before we see really good, affordable music store.

    Apples Itunes and Napster are supposed to be a couple of the best.

    P.S And thanks for not thinking we were ripping on you, because as you must have know, we were not, but it could look that way :)

    If I gave you my Sgt Pepper album, and you kept it, would that be stealing?

    I don't know the ins and outs, but I think it's uploading that they have a problem with. You could run Kazaa lite, no spyware, and set it to prevent anyone uploading from you, and I think you'd be covered allways except conscience.

    No, but if you could COPY it and give me a copy, that would be stealing. Your pretty much dead on as far as "uploading". Anyone stupid enough (and that covers about 75% of Kazaa users back then) to leave it on was serving files. I went to home after home after home where they had it running because they thought closing the X closed it :) If your acting as a server, your uploading and yes, thats mainly what they are after, top "uploaders".

    I would not touch Kazaa lite, while it was the answer at one time, what you need to look at is what is available for download on there now. Viruses, Trojans and crap with a few good files mixed in there somewhere.
