it is ILLEGAL to download any copyrighted material without paying for it. The means to do so are generally not. Kazaa, is not illegal to have installed.

Specif: Is the music he downloads with the Kazaa feature illegal?

The Kazaa network is full of viruses and false files besides being illegal. Some 750 people have been indicted for having/sharing music by the RIAA. It is not a good thing to do.

It depends on if that particular piece of music is copyrighted. For example. If he downloads Mozart, he's ok because there is no copyright on it. If he downloads Eminem songs without purchasing the songs, then he is violating copyrights.
MOST of the music that is floating around on P2P networks is illegal to download. By most, I say about 99%.

I can tell you now that is not a good idea at all. Your computer will start to malfunction it will slow down and grind to a halt. So if i don't see you around for awhile i will know whats happened!!!

I find Kazaa has barely anything to share. I use Bearshare.
Kazaa installs a bunch of spyware.

Kazza is ful of spyware and when you run a program like adaware to remove it kazza will stop working.

Try winmx, I never have a problem with it

My son doesn't download songs but he says he downloads beats and
music lyrics from different songs, but not the words. He makes his on music
from them. We're trying to find a safe site to do this.
    Any Ideas? :)

This is a tricky situation -if he downloads 'beats' that were created by people with the intention of 'sharing' their beats with other musicians to use and modify at will (as a large group seems to be doing) then there is no leagle issue with downloading and using those files. -If, on the other-hand, he downloads beats that are stolen from musicians who do not want others using their creations, and who have copyrighted their material (as an equaly large group seems to do) then he is doing something technically illegal -and could be prosecuted.

    (...)

Not sure I follow -but I suspect that it's beside the point.

The legal side: When it all comes down to it just remember that p2p programs (like Kazaa, winMX, k-lite, etc.) are programs that allow you, easily, to download files that are legal and, with equal ease, files that are illegal. -The difference between the two is sometimes difficult to tell, and sometimes obvious.
I bet that, regardless of your son's intentions, he will inevitably download *something* that will violate copyright law.
The moral side: That's up to you and your son -millions of people use this type of software everyday and don't use it to violate copywright laws. -And millions violate copywright laws and don't find it moraly 'wrong'.
The technical side: Often these types of programs bundle 'spyware/adware' with the application -this can slow down your PC; it can send information about your computer, and what you do with it, to companies/people without you being aware of it; it can take over certain functions of your computer -like browser hijacking that you may have heard of.
Their are very functional p2p programs that do none of these things -WinMX, Kazaa Lite K++, etc are clean when it comes to spyware/adaware.
I hope that helps, and hope I didn't use any lingo you weren't familiar with -write back if I mentioned something you were unsure of.
    Yours,
    522.

Kazaa is full of adware and spyware unless you buy Kazaa Gold.

Kazaa Lite, and Kazaa Resurrection are the same programs as Kazaa, minus any spy or adware, as well as a few handy utilities and are completely free.

Anything using the Kazaa network (Gnutella), is riddled with viruses and spyware tacked onto files.

Corrupt songs have also been released in an attempt to dissuade people from downloading songs.

WinMX is great and has no spy or adware, but my experience is that it has painfully long ques.

Shareazza is very good as it connects to the same network as Kazaa, as well as a couple of others. It just needs a little setting up first.

Downloading any copyrighted files is illegal, and the Recording Industry of America has prosecuted people, so it's up to you if you want to take that risk.

However, to my knowledge it has never prosecuted anyone for downloading, only people that both upload and download huge amounts.

Regardless of which program you decide on, make sure you have basic security like spy and adware scanners, antivirus, firewall etc.
