kb891711 problem

    I keep having problems with crashes and blue freezes.
    1.A fatal OE has occurred at 0167....
    2. IEXplore caused a general page fault in module user.exe (sometimes a different software program appears instead of IExplore). This is usually followed by Explorer caused a general page fault in module user.exe. This leads to a series of blue screens followed by these messages being repeated before computer needs to be manually rebooted.
    I did a Dr Watson that says KB891711 has altered windows system files. This can also sometimes lead to a message "Dial Up Dynamic linked library used a system resource improperly" RASAPI32.dll is mentioned.
    I have saved 2 example Dr watson logs but cannot attach them to this post as they are not valid files or something.
    Running win98se, adsl connection.

    I suggest that you uninstall KB891711 (Control Panel>Add/Remove Programs>Windows 98 KB891711 Update ). Confirm the fault has gone then try re-installing this critical update.

    already tried this twice before i came on thjis board. same problems occur after reloading kb891711

    Ok but this particular update caused a lot of problems for a lot of people. Did you just re-install from your own download or did you go back to the windows update site and download it afresh. This update was itself updated after the first issue.

    However if this does not cure your problem the consensus appears to be to uninstall it entirely as long as you have a firewall and up-to-date virus checker.

    tried repair ie6. tried reinstall ie6 then doing windows update etc online. still same problems

    Ok - then uninstall the update entirely. (You do have a firewall and up to date virus checker don't you? :eek: )
