my connection to the net used to be always on, all i had to do was to move the mouse to wake up my computer and open firefox.

now, after reistalling my OS (winXP home), i noticed that i must periodically restart my computer and modem.

any ideas as to what happened?

Take a look at your power settings ;)

Is your modem connected by ethernet or USB?
Whichever one, that's where you need to look to be sure it is not set to turn off after a certain period of time. This is what Earthling meant about checking your power settings; not to be confused with power settings that you look at through your screensaver tab.

No plodr, I did actually mean the power settings in screen properties ;)

Not sure what you are looking for under power settings, if not for the selective suspend for usb as plodr mentioned...

I think more information is in order? Is this a cable modem, DSL, or analog, and how is it connected to the computer?

Until we have that information, its a craphoot.

i changed my power settings from presentation to always on, no help.

i connect through a phone line, 3 mbps.
    modem is a westell 6100.
the computer connects to the modem by ethernet.

i had no trouble until the re-install of my OS.

    Try upgrading your ethernet driver.
