I ran all of the programs and below I have attached my logs. I hope you guys can help...I've heard you are good at what you do. It's just really annoying to be surfing the internet and constantly getting extra websites popping open how I'm the luckiest SOB ever and I'm EBAY's 500,000th visitor.

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

I need to check a little further to see if you have processes related to an infection that is being call "Black Internet" running.

    Download ProcessExplorer
    • Unzip it to its own folder somewhere you can locate it.
    • Now run procexp.exe by double clicking on it.
    • Let's configure some options first:
      • Click View and select Show Lower Pane. And where it says "Lower Pane View" make sure DLL's is checked.
      • Now click on explorer.exe.
      • Now also under the View menu choose "Select columns" and put a check mark on "Image Path".
    • Now click on File and then Save As. And save the process list.
    • Post it back here as an attachment.
Do you have important data backed up? If not, you should start doing this immediately since removal of this infection could potential cause problems due to how it infects the boot record of PCs.

Thank you for the fast reply! I downloaded the program but I will need to backup my files first. I will do this tomorrow when I wake up. I was just going to bed and I noticed your reply. Can't wait to get this taken care of!

Okay that's great and a very good thing to have, but I'm not seeing what I thought may be your problem. I was suspecting that you might have what is now being call the "black internet" trojan. But I see no signs of it on your Vista PC.

If you look in Task Manager and enable viewing of Image Paths (click View, Select Columns and check the Image Path Name box and click OK) to see exactly where processes are running from and also select Show processes from all users, do you see any processes that are running from the System Volume Information\Microsoft folder?

  8. desert_mp

    desert_mp Private E-2

No, nothing from the System Volume Information\microsoft.

Okay then are you sure you are still having problems since nothing really shows in your logs and I did not see any instances of IE running.

You do have couple things to fix though.

Uninstall the below old Sun Java versions:
    Java(TM) 6 Update 2
    Java(TM) 6 Update 7

Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator). This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {5C255C8A-E604-49b4-9D64-90988571CECB} - (no file)
    O2 - BHO: NCO 2.0 IE BHO - {602ADB0E-4AFF-4217-8AA1-95DAC4DFA408} - (no file)
    O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {7FEBEFE3-6B19-4349-98D2-FFB09D4B49CA} - (no file)
    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [uTorrent] "C:\Program Files\uTorrent\uTorrent.exe"

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

When you say "popping up", do you mean you are getting actual popup windows or is there a redirection occurring? Do the popups occur no matter what browser you are using and do they also occur in safe boot mode?

Do the popups still occur if Skype has been shut down and how often do they occur?

I will work on this tomorrow. I believe they are pop-ups. They open new tabs. They dont redirect my current search. Like if I type in Google..I'll go to google and if I get the popup it's just another browser window. I will try it in safemode tomorrow

I dont even know what any of that is. I'm going to uninstall skype in the morning..I dont even use it anymore. It's not active now and I get the popups.

Good. Also do the below in normal bootmode.

Go to TDSSKiller and Download TDSSKiller.zip to your Desktop
    • Extract its contents to your Desktop so that you have TDSSKiller.exe directly on your Desktop and not in any subfolder of the Desktop.
    • Click Start > Run and copy/paste the following bold command into Run box and hit Enter.
    "%userprofile%\Desktop\TDSSKiller.exe" -v
    • Follow the instructions to type in "delete" when it asks you what to do when if finds something.
    • When done, a log file should be created on your C: drive named something like TDSSKiller.2.1.1_27.12.2009_14.17.04_log.txt which is based on the program version # and date and time run. Please attach this log to your next reply. (See: HOW TO: Attach Items To Your Post )

Ran TDSSKiller and it found nothing. It didnt make a log for me either. It just showed that it found nothing and said "Hit any key to continue." Which I did and then it shut down :(

Based on your logs it does not appear that you are having malware problems, perhaps you are just getting popups related to where you are surfing??

However let's do the below anyway to be sure the Malwarebytes removed what it found.

Now we need to use ComboFix
    • Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
      • If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    • Also make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware...etc) or they may get in the way of allowing ComboFix to run properly.
    • If ComboFix tells you it has expired or need to be updated to a new version, make sure you allow it to update.
    • Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below quote box into it:
    • Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    • At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    • You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    • Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe
    • Follow the prompts.
    • When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    • I will ask for this log below
    Note:

Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

Now run Malwarebytes and click the Update tab. Then click the Check for Updates button so you update to the current version of the program and database. Then run a new scan with it too. Make sure you fix the problems found before saving a log. Attach the new log.

Now run Ccleaner. Only use the Run Cleaner button. Do not run anything else on any other forms.

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista or Win7, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below logs:
    • C:\ComboFix.txt
    • the new Malwarebytes log
    • C:\MGlogs.zip
Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

Your logs are all clean so let's get some questions anwered that may help us with further diagnosis.
    1. If you mean new tabs are opening, please be specific and say new tabs are opening. This does not mean the same thing to us as popups.
    2. Which user account gets popups? Try other user accounts and see if they also get popups?
    3. Which browser are you using when the popups occur? Close this browser and don't use it while trying a different browser. Do the popups occur with a different browser?
    4. What websites are you on when the popups occur? Is it always the same site? Do you get popups while only connected to Major Geeks?
    5. Do the popups occur in safe boot mode?
    6. Uninstall UFC Poker & WeatherBug Gadget and see if you still have problems.

    A bit of discovery here-
The popups only occur when I'm running firefox. They no longer popup with IE.

Havent tried the other things you listed. Could something be wrong with my firefox? Thanks

    The try the below.

We are going to be uninstalling your old version of FireFox and installing the new version. So do the below to save bookmarks:
    • Run FireFox and click Bookmarks.
    • Then select Organize Bootmarks.
    • Then on the next window click File and then select Export. Save the bookmarks.html file to your Desktop for later use in importing.
Now download and save the installer for the current version of FireFox but DO NOT install it yet. Get it here: Mozilla FireFox

You will need exit FireFox now and use Internet Explorer to continue with the below until we reinstall FireFox.

Start by uninstalling FireFox and then reboot. Do not skip the reboot.
After reboot, delete the below folders:

    C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox
    C:\Users\Asa\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\firefox

Now reinstall FireFox from the file previously downloaded.
Import your bookmarks file. (similar process to exporting).

    How do things look now?

    You're welcome.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    3. Go back to step 6 oof the READ ME and renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it.
    4. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    5. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    6. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    7. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    8. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders
related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    9. If you are running Win 7, Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures pointed to by step 7 of the READ ME
for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    10. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
