Hello all. As stated the keyboard on our computer had a glass of water dumped on it by a new kittten that my daughter got for Christmas and the computer was ON. We tried replacing the keyboard with another used one and it didn't seem to help. And to top it all off the mouse has quit as well, which makes it difficult to really do much of anything with the computer.
The computer boots up good but, once your there you really can't do much of anything without these two peripherals.
I've tried booting up in the safe mode and using some different modes there but, there isn't alot that I can do without the mouse.
Also I should tell you that the actions of the keyboard are really sloooow. Its almost like a delayed response to the when you press the arrow keys and enter something.
And we have also replaced the mouse as well but, that didn't get wet so I don't see how that could have been affected by the spilled water. I did notice that the two peripherals plug into about the same place so I would guess into the same board???
Does anyone have any ideas on what I could do to get this thing to work or is it time to look at getting a new computer??
Thanx for any help in this matter. Toni.

Did anything else get wet? I have spilled all sorts of stuff on keyboards. From soup and cereal to beer and, most recently, a white russian on my laptop's keyboard.

In my experiences, keyboards are quite resillient if you immediated turn them upside down and let it drain out. Even the white russian didn't hurt anything, my keys are just sticking a bit now (seems to be loosening up with use).

First thing first; are you 100% sure that water didn't get on anything but the keyboard (such as draining down the back of the computer case)?

Second; shut down your system, unplug the mouse and keyboard and plug them back in. They are either USB (flat plug) or PS2 (round plug) connections, and they do hook directly into the mobo. In other words, you might be FUBAR if unplugging and replugging doesnt work, and trying other known-working keyboards doesnt work either.

    Kill the kitty;)
Liquids & Electronics dont mix, the possibility of irrevertable dammage is High.

USB or PS2 Keyboard & Mouse?

If was PS2 it's very possible you have burned out the PS2 header on your mobo
The solution for burned out PS2 header is replace the MOBO or switch to USB keyboard & mouse

An FYI never unplug or plugin a PS2 connection of your MOBO while it's Powered On, this can casue it to burn out the PS2 header
Best to power off PC then plugin or unplug.

Not sure on this but I suppose anything's worth a try if it helps to avoid having to spend money and replace things. If you go into Device Manager, find the entry for the keyboard, you could try reinstalling the drivers, or, if that doesn't help, uninstall it, then restart and see if it improves things.

If they both plug in by PS2, get ones that plug in by USB
If they both plug in by USB, get ones that plug in by PS2
    You can also get converters
I've got my USB keyboard plugged into the PS2 jack via a converter to free up a USB port

    T'is a bit strange though
I spill drinks on keyboards all too often
and like 'Buck268', I just turn it upside down, give it a good shake, and put up with sticky keys for a while. Never had any other problems.

PS: Berocca is a bad one to spill

Well I'm back up and running just like nothing happened. I sat down again this morning to give it another shot. I happened to remember using an F-10 key on startup just like using F-8 for the safe mode. I tried selecting a few different items that didn't seem to do too much, so then I noticed one that said to restore default configurations and I figured what the heck, afterwards it booted up just like it always has. Go figure!!!!
Apparently it couldn't have harmed any vital organs because it wouldn't have started working again.
I guess all thats left is to figure out how long to let the old keyboard dry out. Its been about 4 days now and it should be dry, but I'll let it go for a few more just to make sure.
By the way it is a PS/2 mouse and I was considering picking up a USB mouse and see if it would help.
Really, this computer is over 7 years old so, if it did give up the ghost it wouldn't be a real major deal. Although there is data/pictures on it that I would hate to lose. And right after Christmas $$$$ are a little tight.
Anyways thanks for you support in this matter, as always it is greatly appreciated. And for what its worth, you guy's suggestions were more logical than some of the other forums that I have posed this question on. Regards, Toni.
