keyboard malfunction

my keyboard is not working the correct way when i type the keys dont respond with the right characters

for example the thread title "kbeybe*oanrd wmalunrct/i*onr"

most of the keys work fine but others dont
b=be
spacebar= w
backspace= u
o=*o
etc.

im on a windows 98 p2 i've ran ad-aware, spybot & AVG with up to date definitiones

ive uninstalled and reinstalled using device manger

any ideas would be helpfull

 

can you borrow someones keyboard or have a spare one? If that works then you're got to replace the thing, they aren't too expensive now-a-days.

 

wow i feel like an idiot, it's always the simple ideas that slip your mind.
