I have an Intel ® Core ™ i5-3470 64 bit CPU , Gigabyte mother board, AMD Radeon HD 7700 Video Card, Desktop Computer running MS Windows 10, V 1809.

I have an intermittent problem with my curser and keyboard strokes. Normally it works fine, but from time to time the curser and keyboard keys do not work for a short period , probably a minute or so for no apparent reason. This problem also occurs when I insert a memory stick in to the USB socket, but is much worse. Is there a simple fix?

A google search suggests that in Device Manager delete all of the entries under the USB Controllers and then restart. I am a bit hesitant in case I cause another problem, so am looking for ideas/instructions. There are 12 entries under the Device Manager USB Controllers heading. Generic USB Hub (3) - Intel USB enhances Host Controller (3) - USB Composite (1) - USB Root (4) - USB 3.0 extendable host controller. (1) Brian DJ

Do you have the keyboard and mouse plugged into the USB hub?

I do have a remote keyboard and mouse and have the USB receiver plugged in to what appears the correct USB slot, because there is a keyboard display next to it. I have also changed USB slots some time ago and it did not seem to make any difference. Brian DJ

Go into the USB properties and disable power control, sometimes it is a sleep issue.

Thanks Foogoo and Eldon for your assistance. I disabled power control, experimented with all the different USB's on the rear of the machine, swapped keyboards and mouse, optimized all USB's etc and it is better, but there is still a problem. For some reason when I am using the machine particularly with a USB inserted, but sometimes without USB's inserted, it just stops the use of the keyboard and mouse for a while and then returns to normal, but it is definitely better now that previously. I suspect the problem occurs when the computer is accessing information from somewhere and it takes priority for a while and prevents use of the keyboard and mouse. Perhaps I will just have to live with it. Brian DJ

I have found a problem with the Device Manager " Other Devices" 690LC that may be part or all of the problem with my keyboard and mouse intermittent performance. I also read in one thread that this driver does have some bearing on the USB's and it is when I insert a storage USB that the problem with the keyboard and mouse becomes really bad, however most of the time things work fine. I have read quite a few threads on several forums and am having difficulty finding where to find and how to install a new 690LC driver . Any suggestions appreciated. Brian DJ

I am guessing that you are inserting the USB storage device in a usb port adjacent to the KB+M receiver. This is a well know issue although usually noted for powered storage devices

Suggest that you use another usb port

Sadly Risk_Reversal that is not the cause of the problem. Brian DJ

Thanks for your reply Plodr. I have tried to carry out your requests and will insert 3 screen captures that I hope might help you. I have deleted drivers for the usb and had then reinstall, and deleted "Other Devices" with what I think might be the problem "690LC driver" but it tries to install a new driver and comes up with exactly the same error triangle ! 690LC that won't install. In Device Manager, double-click 690LC > Driver > Update Driver...

I have tried that several times in the past, but with no luck, it comes up as unable to find driver to install. It goes on further about finding the manufacturer and downloading from their site, but I can't identify the manufacturer. Brian DJ

Are you using a Kraken CPU cooler or CAM software?

Right click the unknown device and select properties. Then click on the details tab and copy what is in that box.

Now, I don't think the unknown device is a USB device.

I will include a screen shot of the result which I think really shows us nothing. Brian DJ

Thanks for that, this is what I think you asked for. I am sure this is the problem because it talks about USB's and I only have a problem when I insert a USB. Brian DJ

Thanks Plodr and others for your persistence in trying to solve my problem, I have not fully understood all of the information in the last couple of threads, but I will keep working on it, but don't be surprised if I look for some additional clarification later. Thanks again. Brian DJ

Simply tell us if you're using an ASETEK liquid cooler like Kraken (which uses ASETEK technology), or CAM software.

Within the last hour I ran the web address: https://web.archive.org/web/20140705...ntrol_V1_2.zip as stated in the Overclock thread and have fixed my 690LC problem in the Device Manager, so all now looks good there, BUT sadly my erratic mouse is still haunting me when I insert a USB stick or external HDD. Being an oldie (75 now) some of your requests are a bit above me, so I can't advise about the Asetec/ Kraken without pulling the case apart and looking for a brand on the fan etc. I am not using CAM software. Anyway, my belief that the 609LC fault would fix my mouse problem has not evaporated. The other thing that puzzles me is that I can attach the Iphone and camera card via a USB cable and no problems, it is just when I attach a storage USB Stick or external HDD that I get the mouse freeze or jerky motion. Thanks again for your great perseverence with this thread. Brian DJ

As I mentioned previously, it is well documented that wireless KB + Mouse set ups can and do have issues with external storage devices particularly powered USB HDD especially if the wireless usb receiver to the KBM is connected close to or adjacent to such devices.

You have not stated the location of either so the above comment is a general, thought valid, one and it may well be that there is some other form of conflict on the USB bus which is created by the USB stick or external HDD (though difficult to see that as the case as other devices do not cause this issue)

IMO if you want to stop the erratic behaviour of the mouse (or KB) then ditch them and get wired versions which I am sure will cure your problem.

I have the wireless receiver plugged in to the USB next to the PS2 which I believe is the correct one, but I have experimented with other locations also just in case.
This problem has not been in the computer since new only in the past year or so, so I thought maybe because of updates to the operating system could be a possible cause.
The other thing that is in my mind is could it be a particular file I have stored on my backup USB's / HDD's that causes a conflict, but the camera card, iPhone etc don't.
Thanks for all your thoughts, I have decided to just learn to live with it, because I have also connected my ASUS Zenbook to it in a network group and can backup up that way anyway. Brian DJ

I hope I am not talking too soon, BUT I think it is fixed. I am not sure what caused the fix, but I noticed it after I did a “Drive Booster” update this morning.

A week or more ago I downloaded “Drive Booster” and for no cost I could download 2 device updates a day, which I have done and nothing seemed to be working, but this morning I did my allotted 2 updates and WOW I think it is fixed. I am not sure what drivers updated this morning, but there are still a fair few System Devices still left to update. Brian DJ

No better way in my opinion to 'break' a system than by allowing such a prog to automatically and willy nilly update drivers, etc automatically.

In your case you say that it may have fixed your system but more often than not such exercises end up breaking things.

I know that this is a much debated topic but for my part I never have anything set to auto update and only update where absolutely necessary and only then for a specific reason....

I, too, don't update drivers! If I have a problem I go to the manufacturer's website and see what drivers are available. I never, ever depend on MS or a 3rd party program to update drivers.
