Keyboard won't work-just black square blinks

A friend has a problem-keyboard won't work. Just a solid black square were the cursor should be. I tried a different kb. With usb and non usb. Still has problem. As I was troubleshooting I noticed a "on-screen" keyboard program that works like a hardware keyboard should. I asked her about it and she said she used this program, just for kicks, right before her problem occurred. I thought maybe she accidently selected the "on-board" as a primary way to input data. I could not see where this was an option for this program to select as the default. Any clues?

Try this:

You can also remove the onscreen keyboard on the XP login screen by unregistering the component responsible for the login keyboard.

Open up a command prompt, and run the following command:
regsvr32 /u "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Ink\loginkey.dll"

To enable it again, run this command instead:
regsvr32 "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Ink\loginkey.dll"

You'll probably have to reboot for the changes to take effect.
