I recently had a keylogger on my machine that went undetected by several different programs that I had downloaded from your awesome download page. I followed the steps as advised and did not skip anything. The programs I used were Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, SuperAntiVirus, Spybot S&D, AVG, HiJack This, ComboFix, Registry Mechanic (Subscriber), NAV (Subscriber) and friend reccommended ZoneAlarm. None of these detected the keylogger. The reason I knew I had a keylogger is because 2 MMORPG's that I play have been compromised as well as 2 different email accounts, and quite possibly other things that have yet to surface.

After hours of searching for the keylogger I gave up and did a reformat and re-installed Vista. I had always considered my security habits would keep me safe from outside intrusion and regularly run anti-virus and spyware checks and was pretty surprised when I realized I had a problem.

I now know that what I was doing before is not enough and seek advice for a program that can protect me from these malicious threats. I realize there is nothing that is 100% guaranteed short of not connecting to the internet, but to say the very least I am pretty dissappointed with Norton Anti-Virus and ready to take the next step to replace it.

Any help is greatly appreciated! I have been visiting your site for several years now and you have always had an answer to any problems I had and appreciate the thoroughness of your responses to people's questions when they turned to you as a last resort.

I go to school full time and 90% of my classwork is done online. I also am an avid gamer and play a multitude of MMORPG's and first person shooters. I am willing to subscribe to the right program that fits in with my computer usage environment. I appreciate any help you can give. Thanks!

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

Quite often people who think they have been hit by a keylogger have been compromised in some other way. I'm not saying this was the case for you, but we see this more often then we see real keylogger problems. Frequently it is not really a keylogger either, it is just password stealing malware which comes in many many forms. The find many different ways of stealing your passwords. There are some that target gamers like you. One is Infostealer.GamPass

As you implied, all the protection in the world will not guarantee your safety. More often than not, the problems begin due to poor surfing/downloading habits.

You should work thru the below which is a great start:

How to Protect yourself from malware!

What you may want to consider doing is installing a program like below to boost the protection capabilities of your antivirus:

    PC Tools ThreatFire

Thank you very much for your reply and I have gone down through the list and applied updates that your site has suggested. I am worried that I may not be doing enough to keep my machine secure however. I had several (7-8) anti-malware programs prior to a reformat and re-install and now I currently only have 3, shouldn't I need more or possibly one that claims to do it all?

I currently subscribe to Norton with Norton 2008, Norton Internet Security and Norton System works, but as long as I have been a subscriber with them they have never detected a problem on my machine, but many of the freeware versions have detected and removed the infections that Norton missed. With Norton I kind of feel like a victim as each time I decide to no longer use it, I have such problems removing it that it seems like it is easier to just re-subscribe and leave it on the machine.

I apologize for my ignorance on this matter, I only desire to have my machine protected as best as possible, and I thank you kindly for the replies.

As already stated, see this: How to Protect yourself from malware!

No single program is going to be adequate and security suites can cause worse effects on your PC's performance than having malware.

The best way to remove it is to uninstall it and then do the below too.

Now run the below then reboot. After reboot run it one more time.

    Norton Removal Tool (SymNRT)
