Well back in the day I had 2 roomates and we all had our own computer plus I had 1 extra older one. Plus they have always been in the open for most of the time. I only played music and back in that time I played and hosted UO shard for some time. And normally Id be watching tv/movies on my setup. Or playing ping pong or (cant think of name) but game with a ball and you got polls/bars coming out on two sides and you spin the soccer ball to the end to score. Plus the people that checked out porn werent the"best people to hang with anyways". In life I always felt bad for people that were made fun due to poorness and etc and sometimes if they were weaker. Because I grew up poor or poorer. And I hung around the rich/snooby people and the poor people! So I felt like helping some poor/less popular people and have them hang around me and work out with them on weights.. and anyways this bozzo just was a lost cause. This guy was like a 4th roomate, always over specially when hot out cause we had air on many times. Plus our apt was full deco with stuff I use to own (pretty much game room) was the apt"guys palace Id say" But the other thing that bugged me was he'd come over at midnight to crash/sleep and drink my beer and eat my food and never clean up items.

Taking the computer with you is only doable if you have a laptop. So if this shooter has a desktop PC, that's not really an option.

Shooter, if your wife won't let you lock him out of the computer, give him a limited account, protect your BIOS with a password if necessary, and then flat out ask him not to do anything stupid with it. Might want to also let him know that you expect him to be responsible for any pay-per-view charges you find on your cable bill when you get back. ;)

    Hi Shooter

To add to what the others have said and from the mention of his shady past by your good self, I would not allow him access to your PC and definatly not the internet, for one main reason alone.

If he does anything illegal on your PC, then it will be you that "could" be procecuted and the reason why is, at present unless you can 100% prove you didnt do anything (in your case you are on vacation for two weeks so proof of your location etc hotel, food bills etc prove this) then the law rightly or wrongly puts the blame of the IP address of the PCs internet connection/ISP account and not the user, so the bill payer is the one that carries the can.

While you have a good case if this happened as you would have proof of whereabouts, I personally wouldnt want to have to justify and convince the authorities of my innocence, just something to think about.

Yep, no need to pack the P.C. in the trunk. Just set a BIOS password and forget about it. Unless you think he's capable of cracking the P/W/, or something.

Then there is always key-locks and encrypted P/W's, and hidden partitions, etc.

Wow, thanks for all the replies, folks. I ended up not being able to check the thread again before we left, so we elected to not do it.

Probably will next time, though. He was a total bitch about his lack of computer/interweb access...

I don't ever throw anything away, so we actually have a fair amount of computers.

I would never leave the higher-end [work] laptop or either of our netbooks, but I have a desktop unit that I bought (Dell4Me refurb, PIII 933mhz) back in 1999 or 2000 that is still going strong, as well as a laptop (also a Dell4Me refurb) that only works with A/C adapter plugged in because the battery is dead.

I have no idea how to do the BIOS password or anything else Phantom suggested. :)

Does he have a computer of his own? ( Thinking you may want to take pity on him and give him the laptop with the dead battery. After you remove any personal info off of it.)

He uses "the family PC" (a desktop) at home, or his mom's work laptop (don't even get me started on that, lol).

I may do that... I originally bought it for my wife and I when we started grad school, back in 2002.
