On my desktop I had a game running using MS AppLocale (http://www.microsoft.com/globaldev/tools/apploc.mspx) which can load an application with different locale info. I was also running FireFox and EVE Online. I saved two .jpgs then tryed to download something in FF, but it was a page that needed IE (RapidShare), so I chose to open the page in an IE Tab (IE Tab extension). The first file (a .rar, I never got to open it) downloaded, and upon converting another RapidShare page to an IE Tab, FireFox crashed - when I opened it again my mouse and keyboard started acting strange. The scroll wheel would zoom text in and out instead of scrolling, so I restarted FF again. It still was happening so I figured a reboot would fix it, but I wanted to get the file first. I tried typing into a text box, and the page started zooming in and out again. Shift seemed to be acting like Tab, the keys were borked. I closed FF, and when I tried clicking on other things on the taskbar, nothing would happen. Right click > close worked, so I did that to everything that would close (except the applocale game, it wouldnt close) and I hit the Win key and chose shutdown. A message popped up saying it needed to shut something down (didn't think I'd need to write this down) and explorer.exe quit and reloaded. I then hit Win and Shut Down and chose Reboot.

Now, at the password prompt, I cant type in my password, the keymap seems borked. Half the buttons make the computer beep. Backspace enters text into the box, and the H button works like backspace, while the I button acts like the Tab key, and M is enter. I can only toggle Numlock while holding Shift.

Win XP Pro SP2, fully updated. All drivers are up to date.
AMD Athlon64 3800+, 2GB RAM, several GBs of free HDD space (WD Raptor), GeForce 6800GT 256 (AGP), ASRock 939 Dual SATA II mobo, onboard sound (think it's AC97). MS Antispyware run regularly + Spybot + Adaware. McAfee virus scan up to date and shield enabled. If it's a virus, it's one that hasn't been added to the definitions.

I'm at a loss here. I've tried a kyboard both from the USB port and one in the standard PS/2 (different boards). My mouse doesn't seem to be doing anything strange, but of course I can't get past the login screen. The numpad doesn't beep at me when I press keys, but it doesn't seem to do anything either. I was hoping I would be able to input my password by ALT+NUM combinatons, 1 letter at a time, but it seems to be a no-go. Safemode doesnt help either.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I would try booting into SAFE mode at bootup and remove the application, and try to do a System Restore to rollback to last known day that everything worked (one or two days should work).

Ok, I think the problem is with my USB keyboard, I'm going to try reinstalling it. I discovered that I could use the PS/2 KB first as long as I didn't touch the USB one. As soon as I did the keymap for the PS/2 went bonkos as well. If this doesn't fix it I'll try what you suggested. Thanks for the promp reply, it helped me figure this kb thing out.

Well I'm haing trouble uninstalling the thing. I uninstall it from Device Manager, bu it redetects it shortly after. If I unplug it and reboot, it still doesn't detect it as new hardware. Maybe I'm forgetting a step, but it usually isn't so complicated to uninstall a device. I also noticed that the drivers listed in Driver Details don't match the installed drivers. The installer has the files saih8000.sys, while the Device Manager lists kbdclass.sys and kbdhid.sys, which seem to be generic PnP drivers.

What is the model of the keyboard? Shutdown, plug in the PS-2 keyboard, Uninstall the USB interface, keyboard, and HUD from Devices (have to do this from SAFE mode), and then have the computer shut down. Reboot and load the drivers for your keyboard from the manufacturer disk, and you should be able to plug in the USB keyboard and mouse, and hopefully it should work.

Also when installing the keyboard, make sure there are no other USB devices installed. I am also looking towards possibly the USB interface is borked. Is Legacy USB enabled in the Bios?

Just solved the problem - the keyboard is dead. I managed to sneak around and untangle the wire so i could try it on my laptop and my second desktop, and the same exact problem occurs as soon as I try to use it.

Saitek Gamer's Keyboard was the culprit. RIP little buddy.

Thank you for your time and help.
