Kick iPod Touch out of Recovery Mode Loop?

iTouch became unresponsive after charging. The screen displayed icons indicating it should be connected to iTunes.

iTunes said that it was in recovery mode and needed to be restored.

Multiple attempts at restore have been unsuccessful. After each restore "completes", the iPod reappers in iTunes saying that it is in recovery and must be restored.

iTouch buttons will only shut it down by holding down the top black button and home button simultaneously for extended periods of time. Power down never appears on screen.

On the rare few times that I can actually get it to function at all, the Home & Power buttons function in reverse (i.e as each other).

I haven't done anything illegal (I buy all my music & videos on iTunes or in B&M stores on disk), and it isn't Jailbroken (I don't actually know what that means, I just keep seeing it referenced in regards to Recovery Loop).

It hasn't suffered any physical damage or rough handling.

I did call Apple, and the tech that I spoke with suggested that I need to simply buy a new one.

iTouch is only about 18 months old.

Thanks so much for any ideas!
