Just got back from the airport. Had to get up at 6am to make her flight....one of. She flies to Chicago, then after a 7 hour delay, heads for Qatar. Another 8 hour delay and then on to Cape Town where she will stay for 18 months. She won't get there until mid-afternoon on Monday. It's a missionary trip. Of course we are nervous about the whole adventure, but know it will be a once in a life time experience for her.

Now to take a nap. :-D

Getting up at 6AM? What, don't you have taxi service there?:-D

Hope she has a great experience, and comes home safe!

Wonderful opportunity for a fantastic experience. Wishing her safe travel there and back and for her safety while she is there.

I wish her all the best.
If you have my type of paranoia, there are some very comfortable kevlar undies available. I wear them under my leathers on the motorcycle when I am feeling stupid. They may be too warm for where she is, but a little security may feel better than a lot of comfort.

Cape Town is a beautiful city. It's the provincial capital of the Western Cape, which is the home of South Africa's wine industry. A visit to a wine estate, like Nederburg, Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens and Table Mountian must be on her short list. While she is visiting Cape Town to work, everybody needs a break. Within a radius of 200 Km, there are many small towns, each as beautiful as the next.

TimW, I have two sisters living in Cape Town. Message me if you need any advice.

I hope your daughter has a fantastic experience! It is a once in a life time thing as you say. You'll have regular contact with her no doubt. That was rather lovely of you Sikvik to offer any assistance by way of good friends! :)

She should be landing in Qatar anytime soon. Another layover and then off to Cape Town. No WiFi in Qatar airport so no updates until she gets to Cape Town. Will update this thread when she updates us. Thank you all......I may ask for names and contact info for her.

EDIT: Apparently there is WiFi at the airport as she posted that she is there now. :)

It is great to see other cultures and seeing how other people live. I loved the time I lived in Japan. Though, this was all in the military. She will be there for 18 months, don't be surprised if she has a culture shock when she gets back. I did after almost 3 years in japan. Came back and wow, it was hard to adjust.

    How exciting for her!

My pastor was a missionary for 14 years in SA (most of the time spent in Cape Town) and although he's happy to be back in the states, he speaks often and very fondly of Cape Town.

I have a feeling an incredible journey is in store for her, Tim. Very exciting. :) It sounds like she should be there safely by now.

Does she come home at all in the 18 months?

She has arrived. What a long trip that was. She will not come home during those 18 months, Laura. She is actually hoping at this point that she can stay there longer. I think she has to come home after the 18 months cause her Visa will expire. But I think she is hoping that they can hire her full time and can therefore go back.

Tim, hope she has a safe and fun time, and that the job ends up being a full time one, although I know you both will miss her.

Skype's great for being in contact but you cannot poke someone via it.
