I was completely dumbfounded the other day when I was in town, just after my Dr appointment & went to get my scripts, and just as I was walking out the doors a women walks in with a child on a leash!!

I have never ever seen this before! but I find it rather pathetic, if you wanted a pet, go buy a bloody dog! it makes me so angry!

The toddler couldn't have been more than 1 & 1/2, has anyone else seen or experienced it? who comes up with this stuff!!!

Maybe I am being pedantic and it does have its place, I don't know, but the little bub was well behaved, I fail to see the purpose of it! maybe if the kids a little snot that runs off, etc... then MAYBE, but their are other ways and tactics to get your child into control! I am a young parent myself, I wouldn't dare put a leash on my son! no matter how intolerable he got!

    :cry

    Hi

Don't really have much of a personal opinion on this but I do know sone of the logic or rationale behind these items and that's these days there are so many dangers around for young kids in them just as you'll know them just with you one minute and the next off they wizz, could be knocked down by a car, injured or god forbid takenby some predator.

I just know they became popular after the James Bulger case in the UK

While you could strap a child into a pram then that's not disimilar to the leaches and allowing them some freedom to walk around.

    Just my fuzzy head opinions.

We had to use one on our daughter about that age....she could disappear faster than a turkey at a thanksgiving dinner!!

Halo, very true, it just seems a little irrational though, um, maybe becuase of leashes being related to pets, it just doesn't look right to me! I admit, it made me pick my chin up off the ground when I saw it!

Thats the other thing, prams, I don't know why, but it makes my blood boil when I see a 4 year old strapped down in a pram with a damn dummy!

I`m getting a little off track here, I just can't stop complaining, me never happy? who moi? :-D

Jonas still disappears within a blink of an eye, now you see how, now you don't! he is a little monster when he wants to be! I get that side of it, I dunno, I just can't come to grips with them though without trying other means first, like putting the kid in the trolley, or making the kid always hold my hand when out and about, or like I do sometimes, I put jonas on my shoulders sometimes when were out shopping.

I used on once on my daughter. We were crossing a very long foot bridge over the Arkansas river. She can climb like a monkey and I like to look around at the sights. Gave us piece of mind...

I don't quite get it when I see one on a kid in a store but I'm sure their parent(s) know the kid better than I do so it's hopefully a security issue. Hopefully not a "just because" thing.

Theres people that post video of people/parents dragging kids on the floor of a store on a leash. That can be seen as wrong in my eyes.. but it could also be playing like dragging.. If I aint hurting it then nothing is wrong IMO. Also the leashes can be used for different things like today in the world many pervs and people stealing kids these days. And Id hate to know that If I took a kid out and he got taken from me from someone I didn't know Id be pretty damn upset. Sometime leashes are good to keep your kid within a distance most of the time.

I don't see anything wrong with it, as long as the child doesn't get hurt. I have seen it, and mostly is when they have an unruly child, that is hard to control. The "lease" keeps that little one within Mama's reach.. Might keep them from being picked up (kidnapped) too... ;)

And you can't forget for the people that say omg they treating that kid wrong.. why not just teach it this and that.. and it will behave.. no matter what you do.. your kid will always do something. Also when (those people do try to teach there kids in public) then you've got the people calling the cops saying your child abuse just then! Then you def. got your face on the local news and papers for spanking a kid in public!

Exactly, Silas, I think that is why the leashes came about. The parents were darned if they did, and darned if they didn't.. And, the kids ran wild.. At least now, they have some control... ;)

i have to agree with teecee as long as the use doesn't become abusive its a good idea specially in dangerous places.i can think of a few tragedies that may have been avoided if a parent had had their child on a leash.one at a cliff top viewing point at Sydney north head springs to mind.even with the fencing around the area the little fella still went over.

In very public places where my 2 year old son could easily get lost, I use an elastic strap from his belt loop to my wrist. I used to literally use a leash, but for some reason my wife had a problem with that, but not the elastic strap - a rose by any other name, huh? :)

So I have no problem with a leash - It's when people use those pinch collars that really bothers me. :)

Didn't think of it that way, that sort of reasoning is well placed. Just a bit of a shock, never saw them before, it took me by suprise!

EXOX3 I thought the same thing when my son was born and after my daughter was born started trotting around like a racing horse at the age of 1 yr it was a thing of gold at the store as I had two that like to look at the toys but they would get so excited and try to run in different directions.Sure I could have keep them in the cart but they could not see the toys on the bottom shelf and I got tired of bending over all the time. When we went to the department store the first thing we did was get what we went for then,if they behaved, off to the toy department where they got to see the new toys and interact with other children with these toys. Plus I knew where they both where at the same time when I was a lone shopping in a store.
So yes they are intimidating when you really don't understand the true purpose of them but after you get the meaning you think as you do now.
It gives the parent a rest and a chance to read the label while the child feels a little freedom, until he/she hits the end of the leaseLOL

    I thought they were horrible...

....until I had toddlers of my own. :-D

I never used one, but believe me, they are not cruel or abusive (unless used that way...but that's anything) when you have a kid who can dart under, around and through things.

Now that was the word I was looking for Reigns, much better than me calling them leaches!!! I have two excuses for my poor typing, funky head and feeling ill and the damn iphones predictive text..... time to try another phone.

A nice sadistic side of you appearing Dom ;) Now I know why CPs wife has him use an elastic strap, off goes CP Jr to the candy counter (notice my americano lingo) and next up is woooooosh, CP with face full of child!

I do think as I said their is a safety side of these and agree with Dom that they are used is walking training, think my neice had one for a while as she was unstready for a while, BUT there is a time and a place for them and stories of parents dragging kids around with them are not what they where likely desigend for or should be used for, unless you want a criminal prosecution... just think a few of the videos like that are staged for the £££$$$ that some funny video shows hand out.

We had what I guess was a harness....chest strap attached to a cord to our wrist or hand. We got tired of her breaking free and hiding in the clothes racks. Remember....this is the era when kids just disappear, sometimes to either never return or to be found dead. It's worth the nuisance and it does get the message across when other attempts at instructing the child fail.

My parents never had to do this....but then, they never took me anywhere. LOL. And it was a very different time!! Only thing to worry about was the dinosaur stepping on us!!

Rusty, I have heard those two :*** 's did get new identities, and were sent to live out their lives in Austrailia.. Don't know exactly where, but it would serve them right to be in the middle of the Outback! I ahve friends that live there, and my friend spent 16 years trying to conceive, and finally did. Has a beautiful boy. Ever since she heard that news, you can bet she never let that child out of her site, or without a leash on him ;) Little munchkins need some restraint at times.... My friend calls her leash, the James Bulgar Child Restraint.... Like I said before, it doesn't hurt the little tykes.. Especially when they just want to run thru the store.. Safety First;) Personally, I would rather be embarrassed, than searching for a missing child.....;)

I having an 8 year old autistic child. The harness that we have purchased has saved me plenty of times. My son can run as fast as a mofo ( mother f'er ;) ) and when in a crowded area, he will do whatever he can to get to a location. I can count on one hand how many times that harness has been a life saver since losing a child (especially your own child) is the most horrible feeling in the world. The harness provides the ability to reign him in and keeps him close.

However, there is also a time and a place for it. I just don't go out into the public with it every time. $.02

I agree, da.bell, there is a time and place for ti for sure, as you have duly noted... I do think, tho, people use them for safety purposes..... When it is necessary.... ;)

by the way, that "$.02" is now up to about $.10 with inflation! roflmao

Well, being from California, that $.02 is actually $2.00 :(

Safety definitely something to consider ;) Disneyland with an autistic child is like a druggy on cocaine. Both are very, very happy and excited :-D

I totally agree with leashes / harnesses because when my two where little you had to have eyes like a sh*thouse rat to watch them in town or in any store, my son was a tw*t even when he was in his puschair / buggy he would put his hand out as we passed the shelves of food and drag the lot onto the shop floor :-D i being the good husband and father that i am, used to then put my wife in charge and walk the other way saying loudly " If my child where to do that he'd get a good spanking " :-D and leave my wife standing there looking all embarrassed ! :-D:-D

Well when you think of it from all these other perspectives, then yeah, I see your points, it just gob smacked me though, I must have been living under a rock, becuase until I actually saw this last week, I had no idea about them! :-o

The case of the 2 teenagers, It was splattered all over our news stations, I could not believe they got new identities, and free! they knew damn well what they were doing, no excuses! the justice system sometimes needs a sentence itself!

Why is it, if your an (censored) you get away with a lot in life, but if your kind, morale, and try to always do the right thing, you get crucified!
