Guess kids listening to those songs could be an alternative to giving them sugar (that has them bouncing off walls:D)

I reckon it would be safer to stick with the traditional Lullabyes when it comes to nap time though.:p

Have you ever seen the origin of lullabies or nursery rhymes? They are down right gruesome. :D

haha...."Rock-a-bye-baby on the tree top, when the wind blows the cradle will rock, when the bough breaks, cradle will fall, and down will go baby cradle and all."

Sort of a what the hell were they thinking when they wrote That song.:D

True. But it's the melody carrying the lyrics that's gentle...in any case, kids that age don't get the meaning of words, it's the tune that lulls them...adults tear away the curtain on the words used:eek:D

Its just SICK when you think about it:D Why would someone take a baby to the top of a tree on a windy day and leave it there? Were they at the bottom of the tree placing bets as to how long it would last?:D

EDIT Maybe it was a public service rhyme letting people know of the dangers of of placing babies at the top of trees on windy days:D

I didn't think it was for real, do you think so? :confused

I believe the lyrics are more symbolic.
this is the version I heard long time ago.
( another theory has it that the song, like "Lilliburlero", refers to events immediately preceding the "Glorious Revolution". The baby is supposed to be the son of King James II of England, who was widely believed to be someone else's child smuggled into the birthing room in order to provide a Catholic heir for James. The "wind" may be that political "wind" or force "blowing" or coming from the Netherlands bringing James' nephew and son-in-law, William III of England, a.k.a. William of Orange, who would eventually depose King James II in the revolution. The "cradle" is the House of Stuart Stuart monarchy)

There are some with strange origins. I remember the one of "Ring around a Rosie" has connotations of the Bubonic Plague (Black Death) in English history. Plague symptoms included a rosy red rash in the shape of a ring on the skin (Ring around the rosy). Pockets and pouches were filled with sweet smelling herbs (or posies) which were carried due to the belief that the disease was transmitted by bad smells. The term "Ashes Ashes" refers to the cremation of the dead bodies!

Also re "Rock-a-bye-baby On the treetop", the author was reportedly a Mayflower pilgrim, who based it upon a custom of the Wampanoag Indians. The mothers carried infants in cradle boards on their backs and in temperate weather, suspended these cradles from tree limbs so that passing breezes could rock the babies while they tended their crops.

    Charming stuff, huh:D
