It sounds like the computer is trying to boot from the new HD. Are your jumpers on the HDs set correctly (Master on the original HD and Slave on the new HD)?

The jumpers are set on cable select,I have disconected the slave and just tried to boot the master,(knew drive)same thing.

I've found that cable select does not always work with 2 drives. As a rule of thumb I always use jumpers. I have never had an issue. I would try that.

Did you try to Ghost or clone these drives?

Is the original HD still connected to controller #1? If you switched the cables when you installed the new HD, the computer will continue to look for the first disk connected to the first controller to boot from and if you switched cables, it can't find it.

I have, even disconnected the slave and just tried to boot the master.
Not sure what you are asking. It's a western digital EIDE HD.
No. I made a partion on the drive before I installed the OS. Don't think the boot is seeing the partion, but I don't know enough about the boot to check it. :)

Several comment & questions: If you put the operating system on this HD, it's not an extra HD, it's the new boot drive -- correct?
I assume you went thru the whole BIOS thing and the drive was correctly recognized and then when restarted, BIOS was changed to boot from the HD?
If you're this far, the jumpers must be correct and I would think that either the operating system was not correctly installed or the HD is dead out of the box. In my many upgrades (my wife and two stepsons are running computers made out of my castoffs) I have rushed and made mistakes and had to begin again, and one time, my new HD was DOA.
What I'm trying to say is that there's always the chance that you missed a step somewhere along the line and should start at the beginning again; or the HD is bad and you should go back and get it replaced.

    Correct.
    Correct.
I think the problem is me,the knew OS. shows up on the slave drive as being installed on the knew drive if you know what I mean. The article that Matacumbie recommend sounds like what my problem is I need to read it again and try to figure it out. Unable to edit boot.ini successfully, will try again. Once again I am indebted to MGS. and its readers.

Found out what the problem is,HEWLETT-PACKARD. I have bought my last HP.product. Every time I have tried to install a knew drive or do a clean install I have had problems. They do not give you a restore disk so I bought one for $12.00 from them, they sent a 7 disk set. You have to install all of their junk to get the OS. I took "tomb50"s advice and started over. When I used WD.s disk to set up the drive the only option I had was to copy OS. and files from the slave . No prob.I will just do a system recovery(HP.s answer to a recovery disk)after should end up the same as a clean install. Nope, when I open system recovery it ask"are you sure you want to do this." YES, of course I am. THEN NOTHING HAPPENS. Four times this has happened to me. If I wasn't on a fixed income my hp would be under the plow by now and I would have a decent comp. Anyhow I guess I will start over try again. Thanks to HP.
