    Where do I start....

O.K. This program (C:/WINDOWS/SYSTEM/asiclayer.dll) I have erased from my computer and now it will not run IE, or connect to the internet at all.

Flash-back to two weeks ago... (same computer)
    : Compaq Deskpro 4000, Pentium(r) w/MMx at 233MHz
Memory: 64Mb; 3.5" drive, cdrom drive, and 2.91Gb hard drive.

On this comp. I have Spybot s&d, Avg 7.0, adAware, ZoneAlarm, and Ie 6.0, (all are the free versions). I have no complaint with any of these, only that Spybot had found only one problem: eAcceleration, that it (or at least I) could not fix. If I ran the spybot scanning sofware, it would find this one problem, (eAcceleration) as well as others, every time for over a month. At first I would let spybot try to fix all of the problems, which it would, except for one: 'in use/memory', to which it would ask, 'let Spybot S&D reboot and scan?'. I say yes, and at the very end of scan, it would freeze the whole machine up good. No choice but cold boot. No fix = problem still there.... Argh!

Did this for a while, trying everything I could think of, (which I am no expert by-far) but I can play games well. [I'm learning as I go, is all I mean]
    But dont we all...

Anyways.. I needed help. So I tried the forums over at cnet, and this was helpful, to a point. After a few postes back and forth, I had realized it was not the LAN settings for my cable modem, (or the power plug for the modem when you switch the cord from one comp. to another).

One person taught me how to set spybot to advanced mode, find the settings for start up programs, and un-check all that were suspicious.
The only one was C:/WINDOWS/SETTINGS/asiclayer.dll . This was labled as acceleration software, by spybot, and should be removed. Since the regular fix mode in spybot would freeze every time I tried 'Move On Boot' on that exact path item. After the next boot, and this was executed, I ran Spybot, getting a clean bill of health. Ad aware, all ok. AVG 7.0, all ok. I was so happy I was beside myself,(figuritively speaking of course).

I tried to go online to say thanks for such a simple fix, (p.s. Where do they go when you erase a file?), but had no connection at all.

I tried the settings for internet options, reset the modem (power), searched for the file: asiclayer.dll on four different comp.s, which all do not have..

I am lost and on (currently) a third comp. borrowed from the In-laws, to trobleshoot, with help from all that are willing of course... Please...
    Any Ideas.?. C

You more than likely broke your LSP chain when you deleted that file. You will need to download and get the below LSP-fix program to the problem computer and then follow the directions given.

    Download LSP - Fix

    NOW:
    Unzip it and run LSP-Fix.

Check the Box labeled "I know what I'm doing" and then click on the asiclayer.dll file (in the “Keep” section) to select it.

Then, Select the >> button to move asiclayer.dll into the Remove section.

Now, click the Finish Button. When the Repair Summary box appears, click OK.

Now reboot and see if Internet Explorer works.
