When I boot the pc the monitor turns on for about five seconds and then it goes dark. If I shut down the monitor and turn it back on it does the same thing...comes on for about five seconds and then goes dark. I have changed the cords. I have also tried plugging it in to my laptop and it does the same thing.

I read on another site there are parts that can be replaced. But it did not explain where to get them or how to replace them. Can you help?

    I run a T5212 Emachine with XP SP2.

I work for a major electrical retailer in UK, and generally monitors and TV's are not worth repairing. The cost of repair sometimes far outweighs the cost of a new, better screen.

The only quick and simple fix is really to replace the power transformer inside the monitor casing, even so, parts most likely have to be ordered from the manufacturer.

As for the monitor problem, it could be power related, especially if it's happening on two machines. Does it get hot, or doe it smell funny (!) for the time that its on?

No, other than goin black on me it does not smell or do anything funny. I found these instructions on the web for fixing the monitor at http://www.wizardanswers.com/liquidvideorepair.html Since my family members can solder, I thought it might be worth a try... what do you think?

Doesn't sound too hard, especially if it's only the capacitors, it could be quite a cheap fix!

I say go for it, but be careful!

I followed the repair instructions I found at www.wizardanswers.com. It cost $10.00 for the soldering iron, solder and the new capacitor. I had my son help with the soldering.

Praise God! The monitor works! This is the best fix I have ever found or been able to do.
    Also the cheapest.

Thanks for all your advice. You guys do an awesome job.

    I'm glad!

But to be honest it was all you! You found the fix, and were confident enough to sort it yourself.

    Well done :p

Awesome! :) Because of your success I decided to try this solution out myself and it worked! I put up a tutorial video on YouTube for folks to use the same fix: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vWGmtsqQYno

I had a similar problem and then eventually the monitor would shut off after 1 second and no amount of turning it off and on would make it work and replacing the capacitors fixed my monitor.
