Lag spikes...

WireLess networking lag spikes

Hi i hope theres somebody out there that can help me with this most annoyin problem. My wireless network every now and again just slows right down for about 5 secs then goes back to normal, but this happens quite regularly between ever 20-40seconds. Really gets annoyin when im playin a game on the net, i know wireless isnt idle for this but my upstairs line is completly shot and my mum would kill me if i took my comp downstairs. Tell me what stuff u need 2 know that could help u lot solve this prob and ill get on it.

IM using a netgear 54mb wireleess USB 2.0 adapter
netgear 54mb ADSL firewall router 802.11g

Btw if i was 2 cut out the wireless and just stick a massive 30m cable from the router 2 my desktop upstairs, how much would the signal degrade over this length.

Check to see if there's a firmware upgrade for your router, and driver updates for your wireless nic.

Cat5 cable can go up to 100m (~330ft) without major attenuation.

i know my drivers r up2date, but im not sure what firmware is . Looks like ill b splashin out some bucks on a cat5 cable.

Firmware is the software that runs your router. More often than not, updates to firmware will fix the types of problems you are having. Get into the router, and look for Administration or Help pages that state the firmware version, or a link to update the firmware. Then get on the router manufacturers website and look at the firmware for your model. It it a higher version? Then try downloading it and flashing the router.

If you need help with the update, let us know, but usually it's pretty straight-forward.

Hello Geeks, I posted a thread on here a while back about some lag spikes that happen during some online gaming, they r short and quite periodicle. I was given the sujestion of updating my firmware, which ive now completed due to be abit lazy about gettin round to it and forgettin my router pword :O.

Ne wayz this hasnt seemed to help they still happen, and seem to be at roughly the same intervals as b4. So help me once again what could be causing these evil spikes, my FR has dropped down to 3.42 which is nearly down by 0.8 now. I had some french guy call me a noob and i do draw the line somewhere hehe.

So work ur magic and tell me what info i need 2 provide u wit to help me solve this problem, im not very teckie minded so step by very Slow baby steps plz take it ez on me.

Hi just 2 follow up one of my friends said that wireless conx, reboot when theirs a slight slow down in the conx, which might be causing these Uber long 5-6 second spikes, is that true????

Can ne one recommend a good brand of cable so i can change off this evil wireless network...

Oh also if i wanna start a website wheres the best place to start going about that sorta thing?
