I use Steam to play Half-Life Deathmatch online. I have comcast cable. Recently I have been laggin a lot while playing the game. My latency jumps as high as 117. I understand it should be around 30-50 for optimal play. Is there something that makes this degrade over time? Anything I can do to make it more consistent or stop lagging?

Ultimately I just want to know if it is my system, Comcast, or the game server.

    Thanks all!:)

    Hello

It's difficult to say where your problem lies. If you are always playing on the same server or network of servers it could be that. Try another local server ( I am assuming you are in england ) and see if your ping jumps around. Im sure with cable you should ping 20-30 in your home country and without lag, again depending on the quality of the server.
Make sure all IE sessions are closed while playing and no other programs are running in the background that use your connection. Also, test your bandwith speed and make sure that you are achieving your maximum dl/ul rate.

I once had a similar problem and it turned out to be a defect in the cable outside the house, don't think that will apply to you though :)

If it persists in all games contact your isp and kick off.
