Since I switched back from ME to 98SE many of the games that worked fine began to lag, and it appears to be sound related because it is allways occupied with lagging of the sound.
Examples are: Homeworld- where I get lagging and echoing sound, aswell as static noice (it's not the speakers).
Shogo- sound lag accompanied with game lag.
Carmageddon 2000- incredible lag and the sound appears to be ok, but it was running smoothly before..
Half-Life- not much video lag, although the game is not the most smooth... But static noice and echoing sound

It appears that many of the games (all who have 3d graphics) are working worse now..

Any ideas as to what might cause it?

    My specs:

    Celeron 700Mhz
    256 MB RAM
Sound Blaster (can't remember which one)
    GeForce 2 400MX 64MB

You updated all your drivers? when re-installing the OS you need to make sure you have the right drivers. Check youve got them for sound and video.

They're updated, I wouldn't have asked if I suspected that might be a problem..

    OK, just making sure.

Incidentally what slot is your sound card in? XP handles IRQ differently i seem to remember, but its worth a try.

Unfortunetly I'm one of those poor people who have a 6GB hard drive, which also is divided into 3 rives by FAT32, so I can't really install XP...
I doubt I could get a solution from this forum because I know it's hard to troubleshoot something like this through a forum but I'd love to hear possible causes for a problem like this, or get a link with detailed information...
As for IRQ, is there any software that'll let me reconfigure IRQ settings?
And about the slot I'm not sure how to check that so help me out on this one..

The slot that your sound card is in : the PCI slot its sitting in on the motherboard. (oh and forgive me i thought you had XP not 98  silly me) You could try moving to a different slot, most motherboards have at least two PCI slots for you to try.

    Erm... hmm.

Tried checking the connectors? For sound card that is.

You might want to try putting this in Hardware to get a better response...
