LAN connection speed

I am setting up a large home network (8 computers, 24 jacks). The wiring is done. For testing I looped the whole house (yeah, well over the 75 ft recommended) and ran ping -t from one computer to another through it. At 100bT I had no packet loss. I want to test at Gigabit speeds and only have one desktop computer I am sure has it. I went to check our three laptops but cane away ignorant.

I can look up system specs but was hoping for a simple command line or program to tell what speed a LAN port is in XP. Not what it is set to, but what it can do.

 

to clarify, youre just trying to find the speed of your nic?

 

Yes, most of the computers have onboard Ethernet and I am hoping not to look up each one's motherboard.

I use Win XP.
Usually I choose properties of My Network Places to open Network Connections and double click the connection I want to know the speed of. This lists Status, Duration and Speed, but on some laptops no speed is given.

That sucker gives you more info than you normally want. :-D

 

either that, or if you go into network connections and properties of your NIC, check the box Show icon in notification area, you can just hover your mouse above it and itll tell you the speed if thats what youre looking for.
