I just built a PC for my brother and he’s having a problem with accessing pages within sites. He’s hooked up to DSL via on-board LAN. My first thought was perhaps the LAN is faulty but he’s getting good connect speeds as verified by a modem speed test site and he’s able to access all main web pages. When he tries to navigate to another page within the site, it won’t load and eventually times out. I’m headed over there now, but figured I’d post here first and check responses when I returned. I’m not certain, but to me, it doesn’t sound like his LAN. Perhaps a security setting or firewall issue. We did have issues initially with Zone Alarm not allowing him to change his home page. Any ideas? I’ll post my findings when I return. The LAN/DSL thing is new to me so any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Check the ipconfig and see that he has DNS servers setup - which most of the time DSL routers have DHCP feeding all the pertent info for him. Change the cable - I have cable a few days ago that I could ping and get some connectivity but during page requests it would time out.

Aside from DNS settings....the firewall would be a great place to start.

try shutting the firewall down and see.. usually helps fix some connectivity issues.. if that don't fix it, turn it back on.

Well, you nailed it! It's ZoneAlarm. At first everything worked perfectly, then, I couldn't even get on-line (timed out when selecting the blue E). I played around with everything I could think of including Nvidia's ethernet drivers (what a pain Nvidia drivers are). Finally disabled ZoneAlarm and viola. Was also able to set his home page. Well, the RW disk he downloaded ZoneAlarm to had some pretty serious scratches and took an awfully long time to be read. I'm wondering if it was a corrupt install. In the event viewer, we're getting a CD Rom Bad Block notice. He's going to download a fresh copy and burn it to a new disk. If that doesn't work, we'll try a different fire wall. Win firewall was disabled and I''ll definitely check the browser and DNS settings. Thank you very much, . I really appreciate it.
