LAN issue...

I transfer files from the l/top to the d/top each night through a LAN hardwire.

The d/top LAN connection icon says, "connected; 100Mb/s".

The l/top LAN connection icon says, "limited or no connectivity; 100 Mb/s".

The l/top LAN connection icon details say "the network did not assigned a network address to the computer.

Files can be transferred, in either direction, IF EXECUTED ON THE L/TOP, since all network targets are listed in the 'my network places' folder, on the l/top.

However, transfers cannot be executed on the d/top, since when the d/top 'my network places folder' is open, the l/top targets are not shown.

Confused? Me neither. I need only to change a setting somewhere. Got clue?

Is your LAN just a crossover cable?
What is handing out IPs on your network?
Have you ran ipconfig on the laptop?

Sounds like (wild guess) that via the laptop & netbeui you can access the workgroup and transfer files..

  3. technaut

    technaut Private E-2

    Yes, hardwire is a x-over.

IP I'm thinkin' hasn't been assigned - see attached.

IPCONFIG won't run on laptop. Punch it up in 'run', and a command prompt window pops up for a split second, then goes away.

Use "cmd" line for ipconfig. Run>cmd>ipconfig
    Using dhcp?

Did you hit "Repair" on that connection?

  6. TimW

Hey technaut, sorry, didn't notice it was you!!! Thanks again for your help on that issue I had at work with our access points!!
Can you map the drive? Are the folders marked as shared? Probably stupid questions, but I'm old and stupid and it helps me to get a clear picture of what's up to try to figure where to go with it.

  7. TimW

TimW MajorGeeks Administrator - Jedi Malware Expert Staff Member

And yet another stupid quwstion ...have you tried a different crossover cable?

  8. technaut

    technaut Private E-2

The cable is new, the folders are shared, and 'repair', fails to renew the IP address (see network manager).

It's a setting that I'm missing somewhere. Simple stuff always gets the best of genius [genii?] (and sometimes dummies too:confused:)

  9. technaut

    technaut Private E-2

lanconfiguration shows the same missing IP assignment, elbiatcho1...
    see attached.

Repair function fails to renew IP address on laptop, and desktop.

I am seeing also that on both pc's,'view workgroup computers', shows only the desktop; not the laptop:eek: :(

    Yup. Both pc's...

Accouple of shots in the dark ..... run: ipconfig /release then ipconfig /renew
If that doen't work, try assirning an ip address ..... under properties for the local, choose static and assign them both an ip address ..... restart and see if they connect..... if not, you can go back to auto detect. and pray....Let me do some research and get back to you. also show the ipconfig /all

The answer is here. I'm not seein' it tho'...

Is it 'IP routing not enabled' that's causing this limited connectivity?

Last stupid question before I go to bed ..... did you open network connections and choose add a network place .... then the "other" option, which should open all local connections and let you browse for the other computer. Probably under Microsoft windows network ......shows all the computers on my home network. Going to bed ....check with you tomorrow.

  15. technaut

    technaut Private E-2

Just found that the d/top had XP firewall setting enabled for LAN.

This explained why the d/top could ping the l/top, but the l/top could not get ping reply from d/top.

So NOW the 'LIMITED CONNECTIVITY' icon on the l/top changed to FULL CONNECTIVITY, right?

Wrong.  :(

  16. TimW

TimW MajorGeeks Administrator - Jedi Malware Expert Staff Member

Oh, man ..... do you see the other computer in my network places? Have you tried mapping the drive ... everything that you want shared is marked shared? Have you "added" in network connections? I'm running out of ideas ....wish I was infront of the setup. Just for clarity, the two computers are only connected with a cross over? No routers involved ....simply direct connect?

  17. technaut

    technaut Private E-2

Yup, each pc appears in the others' 'network places' folder.

No, haven't mapped either as a drive. Is that necessary?

    Yeah, direct connect. No router.

All shared folders appear as well, with complete connectivity.

Just that 'limited connectivity' icon on the l/top is unexplained , and the inability to 'repair'...

  18. TimW

TimW MajorGeeks Administrator - Jedi Malware Expert Staff Member

So you are connecting both ways, it's just that the icon is telling you it's limited? Yeah, mapping the drives does help establish the connectivity (me thinks) ...are you able to transfer files both ways now?

  19. technaut

    technaut Private E-2

Have always been able to transfer at appropriate speed, after connectivity finally gets established. It takes 5 minutes after plugging in the cable, every time - no exceptions. Even with no apps runnin' on either machine.

This time necessity has got to be related to the 'limited connectivity' issue...

  20. TimW

TimW MajorGeeks Administrator - Jedi Malware Expert Staff Member

Sorry .... I can be slow sometimes .... sort of like your connection (haha! - sorry about that one too!)
I thought you could only transfer one way, way back in the beginning ... but now I'm thinking it might be hardware related .... can you swap out ethernet cards? Got a spare or two sitting around? Can't imagine why one would be grinding away trying to get connected ...usually instant or just not going to happen.

  21. technaut

    technaut Private E-2

Yeah, up until a day or two ago, I could swap files either way, but could execute swaps only from the l/top. I don't know which setting change fixed that one...

both pc's are new, both have same make of nic cards.

Still, 'repair' connection cannot renew IP address, on either machine.

Where does the DNS (domain name server?) suffix for a pc appear?

  22. TimW

TimW MajorGeeks Administrator - Jedi Malware Expert Staff Member

One last thing you might check .... in your network properties/internet properties(tcp/ip)/advanced tcp/ip properties/tcp/ip filtering .... are they all set to permit all?

  23. technaut

    technaut Private E-2

On one machine, they are. On the other, they aren't, but are set to 'permit only...

    let's check the other...

  24. TimW

TimW MajorGeeks Administrator - Jedi Malware Expert Staff Member

Sorry ...posted over you ...DNS is in the internet properties/ general tcp/ip ... select auto for obtain ip address and obtain dns auto .... then advanced tab / ip settings should only have dhcp enabled in the first box ... second tab is DNS and should only have append primary and append parent checked .. as well as register this connection .... third tab is wins - enable lmhosts and default for netbios ... fourth tab is the options - should have ip filtering in the box ...click on advanced and it should have all three options enabled to permit all.
Tell me if this is so for yours.

  25. TimW

TimW MajorGeeks Administrator - Jedi Malware Expert Staff Member

Firewalls probably are what reset them to permit only's ...if you only have the two connected, you don't need the firewalls active.

  26. technaut

    technaut Private E-2

    You're slow sometimes, huh?

I'm fast sometimes. All the rest of the time I'm slow:)

I changed the filter setting to p/a, and got a re-boot prompt, and now, VOILA!!!

    still the limited connectivity!!!

but when I changed the tcp port to p/a, the 'all adapters' filter enabled. so we'll disable, and re-try...

As my old bartender buddy used to say..."I'm not fast, I'm not slow, I'm half-fast."

What protocols do you have in your properties ...thinking that you may need to add NETbeui since its a direct connection.... and enable it as taking precendence over the defaut setting in the wins tab.... after installing it as a protocol in the network properties (along with tcp/ip ...file sharing ....client for microsoft networks ...and QoS packet ....

  31. technaut

    technaut Private E-2

    Protocols listed are
    Client for MS Nets,
    Service ad protoc,
    File/print share,
    QoS Packet,
    MS TCP/IP v. 6 (???),
    NWLink netbios, [uninstalled]
    NWLink IPX/SPX/Netbios compatible transport protocol,
TCP/IP ['uninstall' option is greyed out] ---------where do we go on
    the flow chart now???

    Where is NETBeui to activate/install???

  32. TimW

TimW MajorGeeks Administrator - Jedi Malware Expert Staff Member

You have it installed under NWLink IPX/IPX/Netbios .... I'm stumped .... keep thinking it's a firewall issue blocking some of the ports .....you did turn off the firewall, didn't you?

  33. technaut

    technaut Private E-2

Laptop firewall is on; exceptions, 'incoming n/work connections 1 - file and printer sharing, 2 - remote assistance, 3 - remote desktop, and 4 - UPnP framework.

for desktop,... local area connection firewall off

Did you tell me it was a cat5 cable? Hold the ends side by side and if they are the same color wires in the same order it is a straight through, not a cross over... if they are reversed in order its a cat5 crossover.... will post some more shortly....http://users.tpg.com.au/adsl5muj/index.htm

    This I stole:
Another test you ought to do is set the "host" machine to a DHCP server. To do this, create a DialUp Internet Connection and enable Internet Connection Sharing so that it "shares" the "Dialup Internet Connection with other Network Users".

Now, simply set your other "client" machine to Obtain an IP address rather than Specify.

Reboot both, then see if the client machine "gets" an IP address from the Server: ie, start > run > cmd > ipconfig

If its something like "169.123.123.123" its an Automatic Private IP and it Hasn't worked. So simply try "ipconfig /renew_all". This will attempt communication with the DHCP server and try to obtain an IP address from it.

If that STILL doesnt work, then trust me, its your cable. I work in the industry and often trying the simplest things works; so just try a new Crossover lead.

That's all I can find so far ..... going to bed....check in the morning ...

TimW MajorGeeks Administrator - Jedi Malware Expert Staff Member

What is the ip config on both computers?

  43. technaut

    technaut Private E-2

I attempted that task once. Got prompted to select two connections that are not being used by Internet Connection Sharing, or the Internet Connection Firewall.

Can they be bridged with XP Firewall disabled, and then f/wall re-enabled for dial-up connection?

Not sure .... didn't get any sleep last night so am befuddled.... will think about it ..... tell me your ipconfig on both computers. Hopefully they should be in sequence ie: 192.168.1.1 / 192.168.1.2
    or such.with the same subnet.

Hell if I know ........ but glad your connected .... (the previous had a typo ...should have read 192.168.1.101 and 192.168.1.102 ....but what the hey it works) now you may have to reset to auto if you hook up to a router or take it to work or somewhere else to connect to the internet ...we (you) knew it was something simple!!!!

  50. technaut

    technaut Private E-2

Yeah - simple - like me (or stubborn).

If subnet mask is config'ed identically, IP's don't have to schemed the same, so I thought. As well as

    http://www.onecomputerguy.com

I saw the typo (see what I highlighted in the reply w/quote), but thought you knoew of a magic bullet. When I tried it, I got 'unreachable...', from one pc, and 'time out' from the other'. Then I changed the digit.

    Excellent work!
