Has anyone ever used the Laplink PC Mover Software to transfer files from on pc to another?

I purchased a copy of this software some time ago to transfer my files from windows xp to a vista laptop but never used it for that since some of the programs that I wanted to transfer are not compatible with vista.

Anyway, I still have the software and was thinking of using it to transfer some of the programs, files and settings from one pc running windows xp pro to a pc running windows xp home that I just got back up and running.

The program does give you a few options for doing the transfer - a usb laplink cable which is included, a network connection (can't do that since I can only connect one of those pc's at a time to the network unless I go out and purchase another linksys wireless g usb network adapter - which I doubt is even still available since it is at least 4 years old), removable media (cd-r/rw or dvd r/rw) as well as a few other options.

Since I am pretty sure from what I have been able to figure out so far I would need to have both pc's connected to monitors as well and right now I only have the one monitor so I was considering using the removable media option to do this.

If anyone has used this software and has any suggestions or anything else I would be happy to hear them.

    Thanks

    Hi

I've never used the software, but I can tell you that any USB wireless G network adapter will work to connect to your network. They are still around... here's one I found (there's plenty more):

You could also use a CAT5 (ethernet) cord to connect one or both computers to the router, as it should have at least 4 connectors in the back for using wires. This would likely be cheaper than buying another USB wireless network adapter.

Also, I doubt you would need a monitor connected to both computers at the same time. If anything, you can switch the monitor cable between the computers when doing the transfer. Connecting and disconnecting the monitor cable from a computer while it's running doesn't affect it, it's easily hot swappable.

    Hello,
Thanks for the suggestions. They are greatly appreciated. As for using a couple of ethernet cables and directly connecting them to the router - great idea except that the router is located in the garage (that's where they stuck it when the house was built back in 2006) and to move the towers, monitor and keyboards downstairs is not a viable solution since I am disable but great suggestion.

I didn't realize that I could simply get one pc up and running and install the software and then disconnect the monitor and connect it to the other pc to get that one running and install the software and do the transfer that way. Thanks!

I wasn't really sure I could find another usb wireless - g network adapter - but if I were to find one cheap enough would it have to be another linksys or would any one work.

I had been giving it some thought since I posted the question and I know that I can and have used a remote desktop connection in the past to connect to the one xp machine while in another room using my wirless laptop so I was thinking that I might also be able to get the one pc up and running and then connect to it with the remote desktop connection from the vista laptop and then use the monitor on the other machine and in a sense I should have to monitors (one for each machine) since I would be accessing the xp pro through the vista laptop and just leave the monitor connected to the xp home machine to do the transfer.

Thanks for the suggestions. They are greatly appreciate.

That DOES make the ethernet cord idea a little less useful, eh?? :)

    No problem!

The one I linked to is a Belkin brand. Linksys is just the brand. Any brand will work, as long as it has wireless G in the description/specs.

Yeah, the remote desktop idea could work well, as long as Windows remains active/usable during the transfer process.

    Hello,
I did start doing a little research after you suggested the wireless g adapter and I then realized that I could use any brand as long as it is a wireless-g adapter. I would have never given that a thought if you hadn't mentioned it.

I'm thinking that the remote desktop option just might work since when I would use the Remote Desktop Connection from my Vista laptop to access the XP machine you are then actually running everything that is on the xp machine (just seeing it on my vista machine) But if that doesn't work, then I think I will look into getting another wireless-g adapter. I actually came across a Belkin F5D7050 Wireless-G 54Mbps USB Network Adapter for just 12.94 (+ $0.97 shipping) so if need be I'll get that.

Again, Thanks for all the suggestions and help!
