    Hello all,
I have a friend who is out in the sticks and doesn't really want to move to getting a proper phoneline installed for the internet.
I heard that for laptops you could get like a dial up modem of sorts that plugs into the laptop and acts like a top up mobile phone to go on the internet?
What are these type of modems called?
    All the best.

They're called 'sim cards' or 'cellular modems' and you can get 'em from most big cell phone companies: Cingular, Sprint, Verizon, etc. They also have broadband sims, but I think they're only available in urban areas....

Just explain to the cell phone guy what you're trying to do, and they'll know what your talking about.

Check the laptop manual, or specifications via a google search.
Most laptops already have a dialup modem built in.
At least since 1999. My old Gateway did.

Have a look at the ports on the laptop. Can you spot something that looks like the port where the phone line plugs into the phone wall socket? Beware, though, it could be an old design wall socket. Bazza
