Laptop, dreaded blue screen

I have a question about my laptop. It was working fine for a while but now when I start it up I get the screen with safe mode, last known etc....I tried everyone but it keeps going to the blue screen that says "A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage" bla bla bla.....I cannot go anywhere form there......anyone have any suggestions, I belive I could re-format but I am trying to avoid that, lots of stuff on the hard drive that I would like to keep if possible..
