    Good Morning!

I've just completed a full diagnostic on my computer (Gateway Tablet PC XP) over in the Malware Forum and I've been advised that there is no software issue. So I've moved over here to Hardware to see if you folks could help.

I've also had the machine at Best Buy overnight and they ran a full diagnostic on it and could not find any hardware issue.

Here's the drill - the machine boots up perfectly and runs perfectly so long as I'm working on it. Once I let it sit for awhile (say over 45 minutes) it will not come back to life without a reboot. Once rebooted - it runs perfectly again. When it's in that state of suspended animation - the cursor is erratic and the screen will not refresh (although it looks as if it's trying to). Also, I get an error screen with at big "X" - but it never refreshes enough for the error code to show. I have also seen a reference to "Cannot load Mutex 2" and Access Violation 0x7C910843. Tried to write to 0x00030FFC.

Hibernation and Standby have always been disabled and I have tried to eliminate the problem by turning off the Screen Saver and Power Management - but to no avail.

And the fan seems to be running quite a bit more than ususal.

Thanks to anyone for reading this and giving me any suggestions.............

All I can find about the Mutex 2 relates to a program called ProcessGuard. Never heard of it. Looks like it can be a little tough to uninstall. http://www.google.com/search?q=Cann...s=org.mozilla:en-US:official&client=firefox-a

The other errors I could not find anything on. Sorry I can't help more. As far as the fans running more, it could be overheating. Get a can of compressed air and clean out the heatsinks. (use some cation when doing so.) My laptop gets pretty nasty, so I clean it out every month or so.

Hopefully someone else will have some better info for you.

To see the Microsoft response look at
    http://search.msdn.microsoft.com/search/default.aspx?siteId=0&tab=0&query=mutex+error.

If that is too much to swallow try looking at event viewer
    start>control panel>performance and maintenace>administrative tools>event viewer.

A mutex error occurs when two programs are fighting over the same DLL, so look for the programs that were running just before the error in the system log.

Thank you for your responses. I think I figured out the problem. I am running a Mac laptop and a PC laptop (the one with the problem) side by side. It seems that every time I network the two (wirelessly) the PC starts to show this behavior. As long as I don't file share - it runs perfectly. I don't know what the issue is - but I've stopped networking and have had zero problems. Must be a software conflict of sorts. Thanks to all your help.

Oh yes - and one more thing - I do run Process Guard on the PC - and yes, it is quite invasive - but seems to do the job!

I wanted to get back to the Forums with the answer to all these issues. My previous posts were all related to my laptop running constantly, fans running and freezing. I thought it was a virus or a heat issue or possibly a hardware fault - but nothing was turning up no matter how may tests I did!

Solution - I ran SpinRite from Gibson Research. One pass - fixed. Must have been a bad sector on the disk. The computer has now run flawlessly for months with no hint of the prior issues.

    Just FYI.
