    Hi,

The other day my mom was on our laptop (I think she was on IE) when she said that IE wasn't working and she shut IE down. She then said that the computer froze and that the icons and taskbar were still there, but that nothing was happening. She shut down the computer by holding the power button until it shut down. About an hour later, I went to go use the computer. I turned it on, but apart from it taking a little longer to boot up, everything seemed normal. Until it loaded my desktop wallpaper, but no icons or taskbar. Then the following message popped up:

    Explorer.exe - Application Error
The application failed to initialize properly (0xc0000006). Click on OK to terminate the application.

So I clicked OK. Then this message popped up:

    Mcnasvc.exe - Application Error
The exception unknown software exception (0xc00000fd) occurred in the application at location 0x7c914b46
    -Click OK to terminate
    -Click CANCEL to debug

The first time I clicked OK. The next time I booted the computer up, I clicked CANCEL. No difference. I am able to hit ctrl-alt-del and bring up the windows task manager. I have tried to run different programs from the task manager, but nothing has worked. Also, the first few times I opened the task manager it opened in windows 2000 style. Later, when I shut it off and booted it up again, the task manager opened in xp style, but it was huge.

I have tried numerous times to boot into safe mode, (and even different types of safe mode) but nothing makes any difference. The computer acts the same way no matter what.

I did a Google search for the error message I was getting and read that other people getting this message had malware. But they had almost full use of their computer and could download the software to remove it. I, of course, cannot.

The laptop is a Compaq Presario V5000 running Windows XP Home Edition.

I have no idea what to do next. :confused

Any help would be greatly appreciated....I have used your forums in the past with great results!! Thanks so much :)

I have moved your thread to the software forum as you will need to get your system in a stable condition before we can begin to assist you in the malware forum. You can start a new thread in that forum once you are able to do anything with it.

When you bring up the task manager, did you try typing in explorer?

this error refers McAfee Security center/ Wireless Home network security

    Mcnasvc.exe - Application Error
The exception unknown software exception (0xc00000fd) occurred in the application at location 0x7c914b46
    -Click OK to terminate

guessing that's the protection package your using,
just curious did someone download a program then try to run it?

The explorer error code I got provided by you means this to what I have found XP is having a problem with Services.exe preventing the app. from initializing, the recommended action for this is to do a repair install, but for more details look here.

After the computer is shut down improperly it is always a good idea to run "Check Disk".

Access the Recovery Console by booting from the Windows XP installation CD.

If you don't have a Windows XP installation CD, you can download a version of the XP Recovery Console and burn it to CD.

Download the XP Recovery Console (an ISO file):

    Either here: http://www.webtree.ca/windowsxp/tools/bootdiscs/xp_rec_con.zip

    OR here: http://www.thecomputerparamedic.com/files/rc.iso

How to burn/write a CD-DVD image (ISO file):
    http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial114.html

Once you have burned the .iso file to a CD, the CD is then "bootable".
    -----------
Check whether your system will boot from a CD:
Press the ON button, insert the bootable CD in the optical drive, and then restart the system. You may have to "press any key to boot from CD" when prompted. Does your system boot from the CD? If not, then follow the steps below.

The system will only boot from an optical drive (CD or DVD) if the boot options in BIOS direct it to do so. Change the boot options in BIOS if necessary, so that the system boots from the optical drive (after having inserted the CD)...and reboot the system. You will then have access to the Recovery Console.

How to check and/or change the boot options in BIOS ...

To access the Motherboard BIOS Setup Menu:
    http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/bios_manufacturer.htm

Your BIOS Setup Menu will look and work something like this:

    --------------------------------
CHECK DISK .... from RECOVERY CONSOLE

How to use CHKDSK in the XP Recovery Console:
    http://pirules3.14.googlepages.com/recovery_console_chkdsk
    -------------
In your case you only need to type the following command:

    chkdsk /r

(note the space before the slash)
